Strange noise when air con on

I am getting a strange noise from behind my centre console when I have the air con on, the noise sounds like a shimmering of a cymbal, it gradually gets quieter, fading in and out. I am not sure the air con is working properly, its certainly not ice cold. I will look to get it gassed.

Has anyone had anything similar? 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

I have had my air con regassed doing a kwik fit no chill no bill. They reckon the system was leak tested but ok, they reckon its probably the compressor.

This air con issue quickly followed my recent thermostat and water pump swap and wonder if I have caused the problem.

Does anyone know what the electrical connectors that are mounted to the side of the radiator near the air con refill valves do. Are they connected to the a/c system? I am really struggling to see in what other way my fiddling could have knocked the a/c out.

I have checked the fuses and ok. Kwik fit say its gassed and sealing.

Ay help appreciated. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

Having just gone through the replacement of the condenser and now suffering from a broken condenser fan I believe those connectors you are referring to are connected to the condenser fan and de pressure sensor sending the signal to the condenser fan... They took out my fan today since I'm going to Spain tomorrow and those connectors are now actually loose while they were connected before so almost sure they are linked to the condenser fan. Mike.

Thanks. I am going to Inspect those connections to see if there is anything a miss.

I have been looking at RAVE and there seems to be only one electrical connection to the compressor so would be surprised if my other spannering impacted on that. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

The electrical connections on the radiator all seem ok.

When the engine is running I have turned on and off the air con and I can hear the compressor engage.

The top pipe from the condensor is warm and the lower pipe is cool but not cold.

The electric fan to the front of the condensor does not turn on. Should that be on when ever the air con is on?

Anyone have any ideas? 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

What I have understood about this during the last days is that the fan will start when you start the engine but it doesn't stay on all the time... This will depend on the pressure in the aircon system and a pressure sensor will send a signal to the fan when it's suppose to be activated to reduce the pressure...

Your aircon should also work with the fan, downside is the pressure will built up but as long as you are driving the wind will cool and reduce the pressure. When you stop for a while or standing for a traffic light, they recommended me to switch off the aircon as long as my fan has not been replaced. Mike.

I took the car to the main dealer. They described the shimmering noise as being the evaporator due to a lack of gas/fluid. They re gassed and added a dye in case there is a leak. They reckon the gas was low and it held pressure on their test. The car is now chilling and they have said I need to monitor performance In case there is a very small leak. They reckon most air con problems they deal with is lack of gas due to leaks. I am glad it's working at least for the time being and straight through its MOT again. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE
