Steering Rack?

Ok so the massive oil leak i thought was my valve covers turns out to actually be my steering rack,
where the tie rod goes into the rack behind the boot, the seal is pumping PAS fluid out as quick as i pour it in!

Which would also explain the whine which gets worst when steering, the pump must be running dry!

Oh Censored .....

Big Cry

So has anyone else had this issue? is it common? it it something i can attempt to replace on my own? or should i just get a garage to do it?

I think it's a total pain to remove but could be wrong. Have a look in Rave and see what's required. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Thanks stan, read that one a min ago.

Rob, according to rave you need to remove the drive shafts and need an engine hoist aswell to lift the engine off the mounts!

Just found a local place that will do a overhaul on my rack for £150

Better than £800 for a new rack or what ever they are Sad just a PITA!

Although that other chap said 4 hours, which isnt bad i suppose

Booked in to an indie next tuesday Big Cry

New genuine recon rack with warranty based on a price to exchange mine

Price fitted bloke said i was looking at the £1000 mark, not my usual garage but i know of them and they have a good name and reputation, and they have done a few racks on the l322 aswell so they know what they are doing.
The two usual garages i use havent done an l322 steering rack before.

Wish there was an indie like that near me. Had my rack replaced a while ago and it cost a packet.

Holy cow!! £1000 plus to redo the steering rack!!

I've just recently had a replacement rack put on my TD6, as there was a little bit of play on the steering (which wasn't a problem, but I like to have everything perfect on my girl) and this is what it cost me:

£150.00 for a VGC second hand rack off fleabay
£60.00 for new OEM Track rod ends (again off fleabay)
£17.00 for new gaiters
£90.00 total for new lower column assembly and Universal flexible coupling
£15.00 for misc nuts and bolts (not really needed but got them anyway)
£200.00 for my local indy to remove the old bits and refit all the replacement stuff (inc. new PAS fluid).

All in, a smidge over £530.

P.S. the rack can be removed and refitted without lifting the engine, if your indy knows his stuff!! Just remove one of the tie ends from the rack and refit tie end and gaiter once the rack is in place...simples!!

AND I now have perfect steering

OOPS!!

Soz guys, didn't mean it to sound that way. Bow down

I just posted the info in the hope that others might learn from our experience. I know that I got my rack done by searching BRILL sites like this, doing my homework and looking around, rather than taking what JLR or the Stealers tell me (or even what it says in RAVE) at face value.

P.S. I've still got my old rack, which is in not too bad nick, so if anyone needs spare bits off of it I'd be happy to oblige.

To be honest, that price is for a genuine land rover rack, fully reconditioned with a guarantee aswell.

So although it's 1k it's also peace of mind.

I know I can shop around and pick up a 2nd hand rack, but, you can't guarantee the condition of it and to be honest I can't have it off the road that long either.

It's still half the price some garages were quoting me!

If I had to time I'd actually have done it myself....

Discotigger - no worries, I think well done for finding such a good deal. I did some research at the time but didn't find a deal like that, and I didn't expect to here in Switzerland.

Wow, what a great service!

Dropped the car off at 8.30, picked it up at 5.30

And the bloke charged me £200+vat less than he quoted as it didn't take them as long as the last one they did!

I must say I'm well happy!

£830inc vat

Bargain.

Just had the rack changed on Censored van (ren master) and cost £300 incl.

But it was an easy job it as it just slides out...... Took the bloke a couple of hours. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hmmmmm ok so new steering rack is good.

But since going in the garage I've now developed some sort of knocking at the front. Originally when turning
But now when driving it sounds like there a vibration or something?

Il be taking it back to them when I have 5min!

Right. I kind of knew what it was but was odd the way it went sooo.

Im working away at the moment so missis took it back to the garage to check the tracking that's all sound.

Now back at the garage that did the rack and have confirmed what I thought. Collapsed wheel bearing Censored
Censored Censored

I'm getting fed up of it now

Any one want a range rover? Its got a new steering rack and wheel bearings!
