Personally Rambles, I would stick it in off road height as its less distance to jack it up! And therefore with the door unlatched, less angle for the car to be at as you jack it Thumbs Up

Manual assumes your using supplied jack (not recmmended) so normal height as it wont reach in offroad but the wheel will droop. If at a tyre shop or personally using a trolley jack under the chassis/suspension then offroad works as there is little further room to droop. Thumbs Up

this is the bit i dont understand.....

if you start at normal height, wont the wheel just sag as you go up, and will still need to take the vehicle higher than off road height?

and if the wheel doesn't sag, then why not start in access mode?

The standard Jack is not big enough to fit into locators if in off-road height therefore in most cases physically impossible to attempt. Therefore when using Standard or access and supplied jack the Wheels will droop and you need to keep jacking until wheels clear the ground.

If you have a trolley jack (Or Bottle or other larger Jack) then in off-road height you only need to jack a few inches for the wheels to clear the ground - physics... Smile

still dont understand - sorry.
if the wheels will droop.....and the LR supplied jack will not even reach off road height, then when the jack reaches the limit of its travel, the wheels will still be on the ground due to droop, yes?

they were trying to jack the car from access mode.....but wheels drooped to the ground even when the car was up to off road height

The supplied jack has enough winding to get the car off the ground even with the droop (just). Locating it in offroad is the issue.

which is how i started the thread.....how come when in kwik fit, it was not possible, even when using a trolley jack, to get the wheel off the ground when the suspension was in access mode.

if it wont work with a trolley jack, why do some people think it will work with the LR suppied jack?

it's not difficult.....
take one 3.5 tonne trolley jack.
locate under jacking point.
start jacking.
in a variety of settings for the suspension.
access mode - locked.
and in normal.
wheel dropped to the ground in both instances.
maybe lift height from trolley jack was insufficient.

if manual says it will work from normal with the LR supplied jack, then it should work with a decent trolley jack....
logic, no?
and physics.....

Access height will have the maximum droop as explained.

No idea what Jack Quik Fit have but jacking on the approved locations in Standard height with supplied jack will just about get the wheel off the ground with droop. Forget access height altogether.

The better solution is a trolley jack in offroad height but if using the approved locations they need to be large travel jacks. (Trolley Jacking under the suspension is another matter...)

PS: I am leaving the room I have to get on with my day - maybe Craig can help.... Laughing

and why should locating the standard jack in off road height be more of an issue than locating it in normal height?

Gaz....I think you are making it up as you go along.
perhaps in addition leaving the tailgate open in off road height, i should also leave one of the rear windows 1/3 open?
