Tyres for a '71 Classic

Hi All

As some of you may know, I've just acquired a 71 2 door Classic.

I will need to refurb the original Rostyles and fit new tyres

Do any of you know if the new tyres will need to be tubed as per the originals?

Also, what's the tyre size that is most advisable for these wheels (mostly on road use)?

Thanks

the original size was 205 80 16 for all Classics, a perfect alternative is as above the 235 70 16, that is the exact size I run on my Classic 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Lovely, thanks!

Can I run tubeless tyres on the original (1971) Rostyles?

Not as far as I know. I am not aware of any tubeless rostyles off the original 2 door classic. There may though be later versions which were fitted to LR 90's in the 90's which are tubeless 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

You've got to do it right !

205 x 16 Michelin M + S

You won't find any original ones, but virtually the exact same tyre was standard on the Defender 90 in the 90's. I'd start by looking for sets of Defender wheels with those tyres on ebay . . .

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

There was an alternative 205 x 16 by Firestone - rarely specced on road cars. They do, however, pop up at military disposal surplus places as they were the standard fit on the military TACR2 6 x 4 fire engines.

I'll take my anorak off now . . . . Whistle

Thumbs Up

PS If you're going for complete originality, a superb book was published years ago "Original Range Rover". When I'm back at home I'll send you the details. Very much worth looking out for ! Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

You MUST do it right!

It has to be 205 x 16 Michelin M&S.

I would also personally be making sure they were the original tread pattern they used on the early ones, as it changed in the 1980s.

If you can find new 205 tyres in the correct tread pattern that are not aged then that's good to go Thumbs Up

If not I would rather put new 235's on rather than aged 205's that have safety issues. Personally I think the 205's look too small anyway and the 225 or 235 are a nice compliment to the vehicle and it looks just right.

Mine does and I have her sat on Goodyear 235 70 16 ATR's - they look well without looking carlos fandango / or as another forum member aptly described kebab shop! 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Thanks to all for the replies

I've bought some General Grabber AT 235/70s which I hope will be OK with the Rostyles.

There are 4 x Michelin M+S - with the correct tread pattern - with the car.

However, due to the obvious age of them, I will not be using them on the road

Once they're off, I may sell them - for show use only

Good decision there, it's a usable safe option and probably the tyre which would have been offered as an option or fitted as OE if the classic was still in production 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Big Cry . . . . keep it original !

You MUST keep looking for some more appropriate 205's . . . it's the law Whistle

I just hope for the sake of your upper body strength that your car has power steering . . . it was heavy enough with the skinny tyres ! Don't forget to check your steering at full lock both sides - you may need to adjust the lock bolts and reduce your turning circle.

In spite of the above, I'm terribly jealous - more pics please !

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

No power steering......

Just have to see how it feels when they're on. Cheap as chips anyhow (£112 + £48 courier) so will sell them on if they're not right and shouldn't lose anything on them

More pics in my gallery

Does anyone have a lower tailgate knocking around?
