L405 Wheels and tyres or something else?

There are a quite a few sets of L405 OEM 20" Wheels and Pirelli tyres for sale on various auction sites around the 1K - £1200 price band.

My question to those with better knowledge than I is; Are these worth buying with the Pirelli tyres or would I be better buying a set of after market 20" wheels in the same price band with General AT tyres on them?

The better all round tyre will be the selling point for me.
Thanks for your thoughts on this,
Chris.

I would have thought AT's would be a fair bit noisier.

Depends what you want really, the AT are a much more aggressive tread pattern, designed for some off roading. They are also pretty good in snow.

The Pirelli is a much more road focused tyre.

Thanks for the response. I'm after an all season tyre for an extended journey that will include lots of motorway, some snow and a fair bit of driving on less maintained roads in both wet and dry conditions.

I know there is no such thing as the perfect tyre but it's worth a punt to see what you all think - L405 take offs with Pirelli's or Goodyear's or an after market set of wheels with something else on.

one particular member here had nearly bald tyres on his range and he had no problem in the snow..remember you have four wheel drive so that in it self will help and of course decent tyres which dont necessarily have to be proper mud and snow type .. ... - .- -.

General ATs are not winter tyres - they may be OK in fresh snow, but I'd wager they'd be no better and probably worse than the OEM tyres in cold temperatures and icy conditions. True winter tyres have rubber compounds designed to work better in lower temperatures, as well as sipes and a specific tread design for the conditions.

Wintracs supposedly wear quite well for a winter tyre, they might be a year-round compromise.

Edit - forget the Vredesteins, not available in 255/55R20.
