Door Handle Scuff Plates

I don't know if anyone has any experience of this problem but each of my door handle scuff plates (the oval plate behind the handle) show signs of wear around the edges and the paint is worn away. It's hard to imagine how all 4 doors have suffered exactly the same damage and I wonder if it's something that's occurred as a result of manufacturing defect and perhaps should have been dealt with under warranty.

Too late for that now (it's a 2006 car), but the only option I can see are polished stainless plates from Powerful UK. I'd rather keep them colour coded, but I fear it may be a disproportionately expensive job!

If there are any bright ideas out there they'd be much appreciated?

I've not yet heard anyone say they need to replace these, but I did know that Powerful sold horrible plasticated chrome things....

If they can be popped out, why not ring round some breakers and see if there is a wrecked car you could nick them from, even if you have to get them sprayed its a better option than chrome. Discovery 4 HSE

Thanks RRUK. Don't worry, I agree about the chrome thing, but I'm not sure that they can be easily popped out. I'll need to do some digging!

I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced a similar problem. I can't see how it can be as a result of damage/abuse - all 4 doors show exactly the same defect, so it looks like a manufacturing defect.

You could always ring Powerful pretending you want to buy those nasty bits and ask them how they are fitted, they will then tell you what's involved?!! Discovery 4 HSE

I have a feeling they just stick over the top as per the handle covers.

I agree that if you can get them off, have them re-sprayed. Or to be honest it's the sort of thing you could re-spray yourself on a sunny afternoon with a tin of spray mixed from Halfrauds. As long as you can get them off of course.

This may sound a bit funny but do you have any cats near where the car is parked?

My daughters car is badly scratched behind the handles because a cat climbs up on the car using the handles!

You're right Dan, they're the stick on type - like chrome door mirror caps.

Looks like a future project to me, but I think DIY-removal is probably not an option I'd trust myself with!

Not very clear but it looks like the cup under the handle is part of the whole handle assembly:

My 2006 came with these scuffed, the 2010 is metallic black so doesn't seem so bad. I thought at first I had done it while cleaning it.......but the other 3 were as bad!

Judging from Thrasher's experience I wonder if there was some sort of issue with some 2006 cars. I can't see any other explanation and it's not as if it's scratching behind the door handles. I could understand that (fingernails, rings, etc.), but even then you'd expect to see more wear on some doors (i.e., the driver's) than others.

In my case the the paint just seems to have come away around the edges of each of the plates - just where there is the rounded lip around the circumference.

What colour was yours Thrasher? Perhaps it's colour related - mine's Buckingham Blue. Question

Hi - No need to ring and pretend to ask how our scuff plates are fitted ! I will tell you all now - they are just stick on ! They are made from polished stainless steel ( not plastic )

I can agree they are not to everyone's taste however.

Simon

hi i think you may find that the car has been buffed with a electric buffer and they have gone to close to the handles, is it scratches or would you say its worn down. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.
