I say yes definitely.

I live on a road that can only be reached by steep hills and the difference that Winter Tyres makes is enormous.

If you intend driving in the worst of the weather and you value you family, self & Range Rover I think its an easy decision.

Not had any trouble on Nexens in ice and snow over the last few years, but that said I have a set of 18"s with AT Grabbers (not strictly "winter" tyres") ready to go for the winter, and will save the Nexens for the summer months. The ATs are a great all year round tyre too.

Regarding stopping, one has to adjust ones driving style, slow down, leave plenty of time and space between yourself and other road users, take no risks, and trust no-one else on the road even less than normal, people do stupid things in extreme weather, you'll have a towrope on board to help them out when they get stupid. .

Depends what you are doing with it, if you genuinely do use it off road and also in heavy snow YOU WILL notice the difference.

If its just occasional use on a wet field and you are not bothered about piece of mind then std tyres are fine. All the LR Experience vehicles are on std tyres and they cope admirably. However, I have been stuck on std tyres many times which has created inconvenience and also safety issues on one occasion sliding gracefully down an ice covered slope And being totally unable to do anything to stop myself sliding through a fence and almost demolishing a van!

Speed wasn't the issue as I was travelling at walking pace, the problem was gravity and lack of traction.

It's all about degrees of use, what you can afford, whether you want a compromise and peace of mind 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

If your tyres have M&S (Mud and Snow, not marks und sparks!) on them, they should be sufficient for anything the UK can throw at you.

I was happily doing 70mph in the uncleared fast/overtaking lane in Europe and she never wavered.

Disagree. Proper winter the are hugely better in the conditions they are designed for. The standard M+S-marked tyres aren't much good in either.

It does not matter how many driven wheels your vehicle has, it will obey the laws of physics. Winter tyres have better grip below 7 degrees.

Imagine you're driving down a country road on a cold winters morning going down a dip into a bend, a patch of black ice sends you drifting out of control onto the path of a truck. That is when winter tyres give you a better chance of avoiding that truck.

M&S tyres are better for driving through thick snow and if you do get stuck you can always walk away, not always possible when your bonnet is rammed into a 40 ton truck.

Softer Silica Compound equals more grip on Icy roads (<7d). Simples.

M&S is a more agressive tread pattern for mud & snow.

Winter tyres have a higher silica content - so more flexible in colder temperatures and lots of 'sipes' cut into the tread for more flex & grip in the cold.

M&S can handle the snow OK, but make no difference on ice - for that you need proper winter tyres.

Are they better in winter - of course.

Are they necessary / Is it worth it ? - for me, yes - because I want to know I've done everything I can.

I am of the mind that on ice, especially black ice, no tyres would have much chance of you stopping before you needed to. Happy to be proved wrong though with video evidence etc. Thumbs Up

Nokian tyres are an excellent winter tyre, which can be left on the vehicle all year round.

What sort of mileage can I expect from a set of winter tyres?
is 3000 achievable? Regards

That video is quite compelling.

Are the vred's really as good as everyone says as in a couple of recent reviews I found, they wern't in the top few (others with more known household names were) and they seem to be down on wet grip compared to some others too?

Thanks.
