transmission fault only limited gears available

right now - only had the RR back on the road for a week or so and keep getting the message in title

car gives me 3 gears and reverse but if I shut her down for a minute after driving a few hundred yards everything is back to normal , I know it won't fix itself but do I need to get myself lubed up for a right royal rogering or is it a common 'they all do that sir' and just ignore until it no longer sorts itself out as it seems to be doing now?

over to you guys with the knowledge

Could be a transmission overheat. Have you checked the Transmission Oil Cooler as this may be blocked especially if the radiator is sludged up. You may want to take the external Gearbox temperature next time.

To be honest, compared with the 5-speed ZF & GM units, there haven’t been a lot of issues reported with the 6-speed transmissions so there isn’t a lot of experience to tap into at the moment. I guess there’s a couple of reasons for this :

1) the transmission is obviously newer, so Range Rovers fitted with the 6HP26/28 are all under 8 years old with corresponding 'low-ish' mileages
2) the transmission appears to be generally very robust (if you ignore the 2-1 rollout shift issues and the selector lever linkage seizures)

The same driveline arrangements (engine + transmission + transfer box) are also used in Discovery 3 & 4 and the Range Rover Sport so there may be similar issues reported on their forums? The 6HP26 has, of course, been around since 2001 in other vehicles so there may possibly be others with similar experience on the BMW & Jaguar forums.

All I can suggest right now is that you get the codes read to see if that gives any further clues.

Phil

hoping its just a sensor issue as the car hasn't been used for a 3 months or so

I don't want to discourage you but have a look at my posts regarding this gearbox. RRPhil has been great helping me to find the solution (waiting for a full set of coils now).

Like Phil said, first get the codes read.

Can you notice anything unusual in the gear change behaviour of the gearbox ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

hi Ebajema

I'll have a trawl through your posts , but to answer you the box is changing up/down perfectly , it has only gave me the 'limited gears' on 4 or 5 occasions , and appears to have fixed itself Surprised

I've had it in to a local place to recharge the aircon but they haven't been able to get the system running properly , i intend to take it to someone who knows what they're doing soonish to get it sorted , and will have the g/box fault codes read then

Good to hear the gear changes are fine. It could be something related to sitting still. One thing that is an issue sometimes is the gear linkage. If you get a chance, liberally spray the linkage underneath the car with WD40 and then cover it in simple white grease or something like Shell Rhodina II (specially developed for open gears offshore, so really good in place like the UK, NL etc.) MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hopefully it will turn out to be caused just by low battery voltage, if the car hasn't been used for a while.

Found out what the issue was

quite simple really and I can replicate the problem easily.

If I quickly start the car without a second or 2 pause to allow all the ecu's to communicate I get the fault pinged up. So it turned out to be just a quirk with my starting technique , could someone test it out for me and see if it happens with there car??

straight from off to start without a pause caused the error in mine

codes all read and cleared and were comms errors
