If the battery in the key is flat, I expect it to take a lot longer to charge. Suggest to use the spare and main key together for a while to allow the spare to charge (it has to be in the ignition during driving for that), until it starts working again. I would suspect several hours of charging before it has a decent charge and after that maybe alternate the keys every week.

You'll need the main key for a bit to switch the alarm of I think Just keep trying the spare and see if it comes back to life before you start leaving the main key home. Good luck. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I may be a bit slow here but how does a key charge itself unless there is a -ve and -ve connection on the key or it uses an inductive loop charging system?

It's an inductive charging system. If you have a look at the workshop manual for the 2007-2009 in PDF, you'll see the charging coil shown. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
