2011 SC tappets/lifters noise??

I purchased 2011 FFRR SC 2 months ago. My wife has a 2008 same. When I start my car up I
hear tappets or lifters clicking. Is this normal?? My wife's car does not make this noise. My local dealer says
this is normal. Thx! Mike

Mike,

Funnily enough my 5.0SC makes a bit of noise on tickover. I have it booked into the dealers in a few weeks to have this and a snag list looked at. There is a Land Rover Technical Bulletin about this which may be the fix, I have asked the dealer to use the LTBs and report back.

LTB00474 - 5.0L AJ133 Primary Chain System Engine Noise

In my opinion, the V8 petrol engines should be whisper smooth and quiet on tickover. Discovery 4 HSE

Having said that if you ever heard the BMW M5 5.0 V10 on tickover, that sounded rough too, maybe it is a characteristic of large bore engines? Who knows. Shocked Discovery 4 HSE

Doubt it Adam. My old merc E500 was super quiet to the point it was like riding a magic carpet. No chain noise, no tappets noise, nothing. On tickover it was hard to know it was actually running from inside the car.

That said, the AJV8 series have always had their own sound. Even the starter turning it over was quite unique to the point I turn round if one is started in a car park etc. My D3 4.4 V8 is exactly the same as was the S Type R and my even older XJR8. But, none of them had timing chain noise, just a bit tappety at tickover.

Similar thing here.

My 4.2 has a slight tappety noise which I got the dealer to investigate. They gave me a written report saying all was well.

My E55 sounds like a large air fan at startup and tickover. You'd never know what was under the bonnet unless standing by the exhaust pipes. But that engine is also incredibly smooth with the bonnet up. Si. <This is my name.

Mike,

how about we compare noises? Take a short video using an iphone or whatever with the bonnet up at tickover from cold?

The 5.0 is direct injection and like all DI petrol engines they sound a bit diesel like with a faint rattle at tick over speeds. The 4.2 s/c sounded better as it wasn't DI.

Ditto re: the BMW 5.0 V10. Used to have an M5 and that overall wasn't a very nice sounding engine, particularly at startup.

Mike,

An update for you on this one. My car was at the Dealership for a couple of days to have my snag list investigated, it seems there is a fix to the tappety noise, it's to do with the timing chains and tensioners.

The engine is not at risk and 95% of owners would not notice or care, but as I'm very particular and want to make use of the warranty I will have the work done.

It relates to this LTB: LTB00474 - 5.0L AJ133 Primary Chain System Engine Noise

It is a 15 hour job Shocked but having walked around the workshop yesterday I am assured that they can handle anything there, there were 2 D4's on the 4 post ramps in half, body off, engine and boxes out.

I noticed the same (I wouldn't say it sounds like a Diesel though!), dealer said it is due to the direct injection, nothing to worry about.

I have a 2010 5.0L and it has the supercharger noise. I have investigated a similar noise on the Cadillac which has the same Eaton TVS supercharger (R1900) and in the US they have an aftermarket fix which is a solid torsional isolator rather than the spring one fitted as standard. Seems easy to fit and seems to work. On the web are pictures and even a video with the same rattling marbles sound. I think the torsional isolator is referred to in the LTB but am not sure. Any feedback?

My car was at the dealer for a few days and they finally, i hope, fixed the battery drain problem. Said it was a door module?? I mentioned the tappet.chain tensioner problem and the service manager said they just had 2 other 2011's in with the same issue and have ordered the chain tensioner kits from LR to resolve the problem. I mentioned the 15 hour fix and he said
"yes that is about right". They have ordered 1 for mine and when I have to go back for service/brake pads they said they would install it. I appreciate all the help from everyone on this board!! Mike
