Air Suspension Fault

I noticed that the front off side was looking a bit droopy. got in and stated her up. There is a hissing sound coming from the front offside.

The suspension raised and I drove off, within 5 miles the air suspension fault came up.

Any ideas and suggestions as to the fault?

Thanks for the helpful replies! Rolling Eyes

It is obvious that the fault is an air leak.......

But from where. The Air bag is holding air and does not appear to be at fault...

A fairy liquid solution is also a good way to find leaks< just like when you were a kid fixing punctures on your Grifter. Discovery 4 HSE

Ahhh - The Raleigh Grifter (unexpected early 80's flashback there RRUK - better days Rolling Eyes )

Sorry Pauld - Went off topic there...

Has the suspension failed completely or is it intermittent / has only occured this one time Question

A grifter, didn't have one Sad

It has only failed at the front, ands is more droopy on the off side!

the bags inflate, and when you set off you can hear the air escaping as you hit a pot hole. Plenty of them around Banging Head

I put my money on a puncture in the airbag at circa £500 for a new one... 06MY 4.4 V8 Autobiography Cairns Blue with Navy & Parchment Interior

Definately sounds like your suspension airbag has a split in it Crying or Very sad Sorry mate!

It is worth trying RRUKs suggestion of soapy water on the bag to see if you can spot the airleak - Never tried this method myself but its supposed to work.

Apparently - if it is the bag they are cheaper to replace than some of the other suspension gubbins Neutral not sure if that helps soften the blow in any way...

I only asked if it were an intermittent problem because I had the same problem some months back - being stuck on a motorway in the middle of nowhere, in the early hours and when weather was bad - I decided to ignore the dashboard 30mph max warning message and continue driving at normal speed. I already had the hump after extended day at work.

AA quoted 3-4 hour wait for recovery (They were busy recovering every one else because of weather)

I reasoned that if suspension was fCensoredd then I couldn't fCensoredk it any more, besides car was under LR Warranty at the time... Whistle

Anyways - after ignoring the beeps and bumpy ride after 5-10 mins it all corrected itself Confused

Got it checked out by LR Dealers next day who couldnt find a fault anywhere, suggesting it was either a sticky valve or sleety weather had clogged up suspension cooling rad causing it to overheat somehow.

After four months the problem hasn't reoccurred thankfully (fingers are still crossed mind you!)

Good luck with your diagnosis Thumbs Up

But.........

i am not convinced it is a split bag, as it holds the air for some time.

Could the air line to the bag have split?

possibly, and this would be cheaper.

The best way to really diagnose this on the cheap is the diluted fairy liquid method.

the other thing that it could be is the valve blocks.

But I still think that it sound like a hole in the airbag... 06MY 4.4 V8 Autobiography Cairns Blue with Navy & Parchment Interior

I never actually had a Raleigh Grifter, it was slightly before my time, then BMX's came out so I got one of those.

Here's the Grifter:

I had these two in succession:

It appears to be the valve, not the air bag.

Trying to source the parts!
