Tow Bar Armature Fitting - Pics

Hello Chaps -

A few pics below relating to DIY fitting of a tow bar armature to my FF ('06MY).
I had no access to specialist tools or a ramp, but found it relatively easy to do. I'm not going through the whole job, just some of the points I consider may be useful to others.

Like many people on here, I bought a used item off ebay. Fortunately it was only two years old, and although there were some signs of wear, it was minimal.
I prepared it by rubbing down the few areas of rust, giving them a couple of coats of spray Hammerite satin black, and Waxoyling within the open ends.

I used the Land Rover instructions ("LRI") available on the Forum, but found there were some tasks which were not adequately covered.
Firstly, whilst the job from start to end is pretty straightforward, there are some PITA parts.
The first one is if your car has rear mud flaps. The fittings used to attach them will more than likey be heavily corroded - mine needed to be cut off with a grinder.
Going against the LRI, I loosened the bolts attaching the bracketry originally fitted to the car using an extendable wheel brace - lots of torque available ! I removed the exhaust hanger brackets from those, letting the exhaust "hang".

After stripping out the trim as per the LRI, I them set about removing the 8 nuts for the bumper bar. This is the next PITA job. They are Nylocs on quite long threads, so there's alot of unwinding to do. Whilst this is not too bad on most, the lower/outer nut - particularly on the N/S - take some time and patience.
At this point, I left the upper/inner nut to keep the bumper bar attached.

The LRI advises to remove the bumper outer cover whilst still attached to the inner reinforcing bar, but not wanting to compromise the paint on the outside, I separated them. It's easy enough, though. There are five 10mm self tappers spread underneath, with another five on top secreted by the grey cover (just prise it off).
If you've not removed the outer cover before, as I hadn't, you'd be wise to study the LRI as to how it is attached at the sides. There's is some conviction needed to pull it off the car.

After you've done that, disconnect the rear parking sensors plug on the O/S. I taped it up so I could give the bodywork a good clean. Do it now so the boot doesn't fill up with water !

After removing the two remaining nuts (ie of the Cool the bumper bar was ready to come off. After that, I realised the gaskets originally fitted were scrap, so I removed all traces of them.

As for fitting, instead of the original gaskets, I used a non setting gutter mastic which I bought from B & Q. Very messy, but effective - it was nice to see it oozing out when the nuts were tightened.

When offering up to the car, I put the armature on axle stands with the assistance of SWMBO. Not funny if you drop this Shocked

Refitting everything is straightforward and gives a good opportunity to clean stuff you can't ordinarily get access to. There are no additional nuts, bolts or fittings needed so long as you car has the original bracketry before you start. You just need to think ahead regarding adequately sealing the armature to the body.

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Well actually I finished the job this afternoon - my advice is if someone offers to professionally fit everything for £150 let them do it. It's a simple enough job and everything you need to do is obvious but some of the things that need doing are a real PITA. Still I am now basking in the warm glow of satisfaction of a job successfully completed and am a bit knackered good job the brother in law turned up when help with lifting was needed Yawn Geoff

I held back putting on the plastic bumper as it's much easier to give it a good clean and wax on the bench which I have done (all those annoying little tar spots). I still haven't put it back on as I am waiting for the electrics from PFJones, none in stock but half the price of JLR should be here today or Monday.

Before anyone says I know I could put it back on before doing the electrics Very Happy Geoff

Sorry no pictures, I didn't even mean to make a start so no camera. It's actually so simple there's none needed its a simple DIY job. I think my biggest worry was getting the sides of the plastic bumper out of the lugs without breaking anything, even that was simple after I figured it out. On a 2010 the rear metal bumper is pretty light however when added to the armature combined its a heavy Censored . Geoff
