Coolant escaping from coolant cap

Hi all

Quick question, does anyone have any idea why I am losing coolant from the coolant cap. I can't find any coolant leaks anywhere else. Engine temp stays constant with the needle fixed in the middle of the dial. No signs of coolant entering the engine e.g mayo in oil. Coolant expansion tank has been replaced and a new cap fitted but still coolant is escaping, coolant pipes don't seem any more under pressure than normal and heaters in the car work perfectly?

Any ideas would be great!

Hi mate, not sure what's on top but says 140 on the underside of the cap. That's the one supplied by land rover for the part number listed? Only started doing it about 2 weeks ago. Thought the tank had a slight crack so replaced the tank and cap but still does it.

Tried PTFE?

Ours was losing coolant via the expansion tank bleed screw and I permanently fixed it by using plumber's Teflon PTFE tape, as covered in this link:

Mine deffo coming from the cap itself. Before I replaced the old tank and cap with a new one if I listened carefully I could hear a hissing noise from the cap which is what made me think it had some sort of split in the plastic.

This has been a problem with quite a few cars. Even caps from Duckworths have been supplied at the wrong pressure rating. Do you have your old one?

yes my old cap has 140 stamped on it, never had any problems with this tank or cap leaking for the 4 years i have had the car up until now?

It might be worth trying to carefully wrap some PTFE around the thread of the main cap anyway. It won't do any harm and will easily come oof if unsuccessful. It might even work! Thumbs Up

If it is visibly or audiably coming out of the actual cap then it sounds like the caps pressure regulator is either wrong or broken.

Was it doing this with your old cap or was that simply the bottle leaking?
Have you tried the old cap on the new bottle? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

yes i can visually hear and see water escaping from the cap when the engine is up to temp.

I have just been on a road test with my faultmate plugged into monitor the engine.

Took the car down the country lanes where i live which a mix of fast roads, steep slow hills lots of speeding up/slowing down for corners. Gave the car a little bit of a boot to try and raise the engine temp to as high as possible to ensure that the coolant system is pressuring.

Once the engine got up to the operating temp of 105 degrees the radiator temp started to steadily increase with an average engine temp of 104, 105, 106 degrees and radiator ranged from 50-60 degrees depending on my driving style. The engine peeked at 108 degrees when i sat in traffic for a couple of minutes but soon dropped back to 105.

On my return home i left the engine running and checked the coolant pipes they felt normal and certainly not over pressured/bulging although the cap was letting water escape.

Heaters in the car work perfectly and blow very hot on full temp as normal.

Checked the oil again and still no signs of mayo indicating coolant seeping into the oil system.

Yes can visually see and hear the cap leaking, yes my old cap was leaking which lead to me think and replace my old coolant tank and cap for a new one (the old one was the original tank so 10 years old) not tried the old cap on the new tank, the old cap is the same 140 rating as the new one.

thats what i am thinking, only question i have on going for a higher cap rating is i have been running on a 140 cap for 4 years up until now and the new cap i have got from the land rover dealership is rated at 140 as well.

Im just searching the BMW forums now to see if they have any similar issues and what cap rating they are using.

Check that the inlet and oulet of the expansion tank aren't blocked.
