4.2 supercharged or 5.0 supercharged?

The guy at my local independent Landrover garage has always said that my 57 plate 4.2 supercharged was one of the best & most reliable models out of the lot (L322), but is he right?

Is the 5.0 supercharged as reliable?

The 4.2 can be real slick!

Ours wasn't Embarassed

Well it was until wasn't Laughing

... and perhaps Sirs expectations were just a tad unrealistic given the fact that it was a used vehicle; and in fairness Sir, what we are talking about is a negligible discharge from a failed seal that is difficult to replicate, therefore difficult to detect where any leak might be coming from:

Having owned both, 5.0 every time. To add to Stan's comments, 29% more BHP, 12% more torque and 7.4% increase in fuel economy (not that you will ever achieve that as you just have to keep testing that charger!), Adaptive Cruise Control, continuously adjustable dampers, improved terrain response etc etc

4.2 Smile

From strictly a reliability perspective I have been told by multiple dealer techs and service advisors as well as excellent independts like Dave Tallant, that the 4.2 is a more reliable engine.

The 5.0 sc is direct injected and is a great engine that is more responsive, it does I think get better mpg and has better power, but I've only had to change the thermostat in 65k miles on a 4.4 jag, and i am now replacing the timing chain and guides on my 5.0 after only 6k miles. DI engines build up more carbon fouling I have been told. OffRoadRover.com An American Western Range Rover Off Road Blog

Thanks to everyone with the replys. I don't want to talk it up but I've had nearly two years without any major problems, however now faced with getting the blower motor changed. Believe it or not the official book time for changing it is 7 hours 😳 That is all my warranty people with pay for. My local indie says 3 days. So I'm going to take a chance and change it myself with guidance from the changeover in the wiki. Cheers Chris 2007 Range Rover Supercharged in Zermatt Silver with Jet Leather
