Another alternator gone

So the Rangie would not turn over on Saturday morning, last used on Friday night. interior lights dim and more messages on the dash than you can poke a stick at.
Took the battery off Bosch S3 (110ah 700CCA) with a sticker saying it was new in January 2011. Now charged up and back on the Rangie

Got the engine started and the alternator is giving 15v unloaded, dropping to 11.45v with all the toys on. I guess this confirms the Alternator is gone (it has been whining like a banshee for 18 months now).

What alternator is best to go for? an OEM Denso unit?

Should I replace my battery? I don't think it is goosed yet, but it is down on CCA capacity 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

I went for the Denso unit from CP4Less, using the home page voucher was around 180 posted. Although I've changed both the battery and alternator I'm not convinced I've fixed my battery flattening issues.
I think its still draining and am still investigating.

Went for the same, the original is a denso unit too. So should last.

Mine is giving the same voltages. Under and over charging voltages seem to scoobie the batteries too. So be prepared for the battery to have gone as well.

It is in at the moment having it done. First one my chap has done so have give. Him both rave instructions as t24res instructions as a starter for 10. Hoping it wont take too long....... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Nomad,
The part numbers differ in that the belt pulley on the alternator has 6 or 8 ribs. Mine had 8ribs classified as 8pk. The voucher appears to be missing ATM Crying or Very sad Ian

Have a look on lrparts.ru at microcat as there was a changeover vin, think i pit it in the other alternator q thread running, pre changeover seems to be 6pk and post changeover 8pk we thinks. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ian. Thanks for the checkout code - it does work Very Happy In the meantime I've found a local LR specialist who will fit an original genuine alternator for £485 if its three hours work but £55 per hour if its more. Does this seem reasonable? Should he offer me a fixed price or is it reasonable to say 'it depends'? He hasn't seen the car yet. He mentioned things like the possibility of seized bolts etc.. 2012 5.0L S/C

See if he will do the job if you supply.

Get the denso unit (original) form ecp or whoever is cheapest, and 55 per hour should be £165 to fit. So 365 in total..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Tempted to come and do it myself for that money Wink
Any decent garage will do labour only, the unit from CP4Less is the same. Just he'll put the profit in his bin. Ask for a labour only quote, I think it books at about 4.5hrs on paper. There isn't anything that will cause a problem, unless he's never seen a FF before. Ian

He's ok to do it labour only £55 plus the dreaded VAT per hour. Obviously he prefers to source the parts but in this case his price was not too far off the cp4less price. The issue is the number of hours. I told him it could be done in three hours (for a professional who's done it before). He was giving himself a little room to move. So the consensus is that 4 hours is probably reasonable. That's £264. So about £500 all in.

I don't have a big problem with the alternator at the moment so that's too much to pay for preventative maintenance. I just hope it doesn't pack up when I'm up in the Alps in March Shocked

Of course you could come down from Henley and do it for me or I'll wait until July - I can be sipping Champers at the Regatta whilst you're in the car park doing my alternator!! Whistle Rolling with laughter 2012 5.0L S/C
