Gearboxes (again) - one for RRPhil

before I ask my question I am sorry for dragging the subject of box failures up yet again.....

Right apologies over Smile

When the Torque converter starts to go and you get the classic cattle grid and judder noises - does this happen all the time at all engine temps i.e. from first start in the morning etc?

Reason for asking is my 2003 4.4V8 Vogue has started to make the odd rumble but only does it when the car is well up to temperature. Now a while back when my Rad was failing I think the oil cooler was getting starved of cooling (bottom rows of rad were well blocked) and may have over heated once or twice.

[Clutching at straws here] - could the gearbox failure symptoms I am seeing just be the gearbox oil being knackered and too thin due to being cooked OR is the TC fubar ? "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

In my experience, stop driving it and get it into a reputable gearbox place asap - you might be lucky (I was) and only need a TC replacement - if you drive it much more though you'll almost certainly need a gearbox too.

Based on my own experience, my view on this was that the piston stroke on the lock-up clutch was so short that only a small amount of wear of the friction plate was necessary for the “cattle grid” noise/vibration to manifest itself.

On my car it was around the 100,000 mile mark that the problem began and, although it took me months to get around to replacing the torque converter, when I finally did replace it, the lock-up clutch friction plate still had friction material left on it (though the radial grooves which allow cooling oil to flow across the friction face when the clutch is in its ‘continuous slip’ mode had worn away)

For that reason I’ve been recommending people to replace the TC but that there’s no great urgency as, unlike with the TD6 transmission, there’s plenty of warning and no imminent danger of it dumping huge quantities of debris into the fluid.

However, I notice over on rangerovers.net that ghur has recently posted a couple of photos of the friction plate that came out of his 5HP24 torque converter. He’d tried using ‘Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx’ to cure his vibration issue, though I have no idea whether this contributed to the wear or not.

It’s probably wise, therefore, to get this issue sorted sooner rather than later.

Regarding your fluid, clearly the 100,000 mile fluid change recommendation from ZF is based on the fluid operating at ‘normal’ temperature levels. If you’ve had the overheat warning then the fluid temperature in the sump has exceeded 140 deg.C. and, as the fluid life halves for every 10 deg.C rise in temperature due to oxidation, it would certainly be a sensible precaution to replace the fluid (only use Mobil ATF LT71141). It makes sense to do the fluid change at the same time as replacing the torque converter as the TC normally retains a fair proportion of the total fluid capacity (9.9 litres).

Excellent - thanks RRPhil.

Does anyone have a recommended TC replacement company somewhere near the South East - more specifically Sussex? "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

I would suggest Sussex AutoParts at Hailsham (http://www.sussexautos.co.uk/) as being your best bet for having your torque converter remanufactured. Any competent mechanic should be able to replace it for you as there’s no specialist automatic transmission knowledge required i.e. there’s no need to open up the transmission itself. The book time for the job is around 5 hours.
