Good idea to convert an 04 4.4?

Hi All,

I've been looking at this a while now and I'm in the process of getting the old slab converted to LPG as I've found out that there is in fact a local supplier for fuel around here now at 69ppl.

A local installer has offered me what seems like a good deal on a system with a 95L tank. The system is used (apparently just removed from an L322 that was written off after only being installed for 6 months) but they will offer a full warranty as per a new system, UKLPG registration, etc.

The car has covered 70,000 miles and has been owned in the family and serviced by the same LR dealer all it's life with intervals at exactly 12 months and 7,000 miles average and it has just had a Level2 service with new spark plugs and an MOT.

So...genius move or ruining a lovely car? Laughing

Hi Stan,

Break even for me would be about 9,000 miles so not very long as the install is not ridiculously expensive.

But having said that I just like the idea of choosing where my money goes. So for the first 9,000 or so miles I've chosen to pay less fuel duty and give the rest directly to a decent bloke trying to earn a crust installing LPG.

After that I'm just giving central funds less of my hard earned to be frittered away.

I have almost the identical car to you. It was LPG'd 4 years ago by the previous but one owner and has run faultlessly ever since. It is a STAG system installed by AUTOPROFESSGAS in South Wales and they are Polish and very good They do Jags and porsches etc. think cost was c. £1,000. there is a requirement for a service (only £45) every year or 200 hours. Can be done online with a £50 cable)

On petrol alone, I get c.15-19 MPG but get equivalent of 28-32 on LPG. Only hassle is filling up every 220 miles but you can run on petrol for another 300 miles I guess?

I would probably go diesel if I was doing megamiles (had a TD6 first which got 28 MPG) but at the moment this suits me fine, and outdoes my TD6 in lower costs!! Oh and you get £10 back if registering as LPG (whoopeedooodoo!)

Work out your miles per year. If less than 5-6,000 (haven't done the exact maths) then you are probably better off just running as is.

depends on how long you intend to keep the car depends on payback
i choose my cars very carefully,hold out for the best i can find and then keep them for a long time so so payback is good for me
all my range rovers have been converted to LPG and the 322 is the best by far on LPG(runs faultless on a prins system) 220 miles around town,280ish on the motorway
need to keep engine well serviced for best results(sounds like you do), also runs hotter so cooling system needs to be 110% before you start
down side= no spare and noisy compressor if not fitted and soundproofed properly

i know Kent is cheaper for LPG the minute im out of Surrey and in Sturry, Thanet area LPG drops in price

My FF had 55000 on it when it was converted and i havent looked back, ive got a BRC system fitted to mine for 1700 or 1800

I do apprx 6000 miles in my car a year and it paid for itself in the first year

Thumbs Up not a question for me, been doing LPG for years. If you keep the car for another 2 years you'll be fine. So much more power compared to a diezzzzzel, and so much cleaner. Mr. Green

Its an easy conversion compared to the s/c which can be a little troublesome

you will not need valve saver system if its a bmw engined car. some say it is definitely needed for the ajv8 jag engine , some say its not needed at all though for all variants Rolling Eyes Confused

Ive got a 56 plate 4.4 with the AJV8, it was also converted by autoprofessgas by the previous owner, runs like a dream, 230 miles on a tankfull of LPG (65L, usually around the £50 mark). we bought our particular FF because it had been converted, although I've only had her for 7 weeks I've not regretted it. Had a few snags with the 'check engine' light when I first got her (will post the story on here when I have time), but nothing to do with the LPG (despite supplying dealers opinion), and all sorted now.

I'd say go for it, the savings make it well worthwhile, and there is no noticeable difference in the (awesome) performance . Very Happy Very Happy 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

Spot on... now we can sit and wait for the idiot who popped up on another thread and condemned LPG'ers as cheapskates who in their opinion, skimped on servicing costs as well !!

Strange that cos I just spend £80 today replacing window strips on the front doors of my 2003.
