Some lovely lanes around there, be aware that North Yorks County Council have said that all byways are NOT open to vehicular traffic. That being said, the bleakness will play in your favour.

I took this last time I went:

I think Rudland rigg above Helmsley is still accessible to 4x4's these days .

I can't remember tbh, probably around Osmotherley.

I used to live in Thirsk as a teen so went back in the l322 for a play on the moors. Got a lit further than my Fiat Uno did that's for sure!

73vse.. that's what I was thinking of to be honest and going left to right across it as well. The left to right as you look at the map was in LRO a couple of months ago.

will have a jolly out anyway, just for the views if nothing else... Thumbs Up

well a bit deflated as I didn't get time to go and play!!! by the time we had a wander in Pickering and let the dogs run about in Dalby Forest for a few hours, the sky didn't look too good and I was only going to go on my own if it was a really good day. Shame really as I had marked my maps up and was ready to go, but that's life always another day. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

That's a shame stu.

I had a quick google when you mentioned Dalby Forest as there was a very good pay site at the other end of it called Langdale Quest which is closed now Sad It was very good and had a treasure hunt to keep the nippers amused.

My favourite route is to head straight from Pickering to Robin Hoods bay over the moors. About 3/4 of the way to the end the road is unsurfaced and there is a rather challenging section cutting between the main roads that requires a bit of momentum and crossed fingers not to leave too much of the hanging off bits of the car behind Very Happy

There are loads of byways. My usual ploy is to drop the Wife and kids off for their ubiquitous holiday pony trek and then head off for a couple of hours hoping not to get stuck Laughing In leu of any recovery equipment I usually rely on momentum.

Cheers

Clive
