Petrol Transmission service

RR 2003-2005 Transmission fluid & filter change - DIY

Here we go:
What you need:

    90-120 minutes
Transmission fluid (5 qts)- I used full synth. AMSoil - exceeds everbodies specs and is also in my engine, the best I know..
    Transmission filter
    Transmission filter rubber o-ring
    Transmission pan gasket
Fluid filler aid - you need this to refill the tranny with fluid
    WD40
    Brake cleaner
    Degreaser
    Brush
    Shop towels

The parts cost is not too bad maybe roughly £120
Fluid specs:

Procedure:
Use proper sized sockets/tools!

Car engine/transmission should be at operating temperature warm, not too hot!

1) Put car on lift - SPRAY all the tranny pan bolts with WD40 - this will make the removal a lot easier!
NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO ADMIRE THE BMW STICKER AND THE LIFETIME FILL COMMENT

2) Remove tranny drain plug and drain fluid out - watch your hands this might be hot!!!!
Have a container for drainage ready....

3) Remove lever on passenger side (I believe this is the shifting lever) by unscrewing 3 nuts (2 on bracket, 1 on lever) - see 2 pitcures:

4) Remove all the screws around the transmission pan - be careful with the rear ones, not to strip them - when you get towards the end of removing all the bolts leave one bolt on the left and right in, get a helper holding the pan while removing the 2 last bolts

5) Remove (re)fill plug - located on the passenger side at the rear end above the pan seal height - partly hidden by the big black tube protecting the tranny..

6) Remove old filter (2 screws) and install new filter

7) Remove old seal and CAREFULLY clean up surface with razor blade or screwdriver (DONT CUT ANY OF THE WIRES BY ACCIDENT!) - I also put some brake clean on a rag and carefully wiped the seal area.

Clean up pan:
- Drain out all the fluid and remove the 4 magnets that are in the pan
- Wash/Clean the pan and the magnets with degreaser and/or brake clean - make sure there are no little metal flakes left on the magnets - finding SMALL amounts of the metal flakes on the magnets is normal.
Re-attach the drain plug after cleaning

9) NOW CAREFUL!!!! Lay new seal on pan and with your helper lift and line up with upper side - make sure the holes line up and the seal is not in the way - screw in 3 or 4 bolts and keep checking line up of the seal through the screw holes...screw in all remaining bolts hand tight only and once all are in place begin tightening - not too tight, one hand wrist tight only if your are not too weak or the Terminator - don't need to be too tight!

10) Now that the pan is tight back on - start refilling - it will take about 4.0 qts, maybe 4.5 - once the fluid starts to leak out of the refill hole - of course - stop filling it..

11) Start up the car, wait a few seconds and continue to fill untill the fluid starts to overflow again.
Close the fill plug just reasonable tight to road test - you need to open it again...
Shift through the gears (with your foot on the brake while standing and check that it is smooth)

12) If all is smooth - take the car of the lift and drive it for a few minutes - shift through ALL the gears and listen and feel to your car - should be all smooth - dont drive too long - the engine and of course the tranny with the new fluid will get hot and you want to check it again!!!

13) Put the care back up on the lift and leave the car running - remove the fill plug and check if fluid is still overflowing out (it should it is expanding now as its temperature is higher now...) if so close and tighten - if not continue filling until it starts to overflow...and then close and thighten.

14) Spray brake clean to clean up excess fluid and wipe off - your mess - check for any leakage around the new seal.

15) YOU ARE DONE

Similar thing to a few of the BMW boards I used to post on, Even BMW have noticed that it's NOT actually lifetime fill. Particularly if any symptoms such as sloppy/slow shifts or hesitation or that 'slipping' feeling. I know a few people with the ZF 'boxes in E36's which thew their toys out the pram..

If the parts cost is <£150 + a few hours labour and a new/refurb transmission is £000's it's a worthwhile bet.

Especially if there is/will be any towing or off-roading!

Just my £0.02..

Thumbs Up
