'Check coolant' msg after replacing header tank

Morning all,

Found the header/overflow tank on my 2002 4.4 has the tiniests of cracks in one of the plastic seams and was ejecting steam and water out of it, actually took me a while to find it and thought I had a head gasket drama unfolding, as I could never find coolant on the ground.

Anyhoo, found a new tank, put it in (I'm liking the hose quick detach feature) and topped everything up as best I could.

Now I still have the 'check coolant' msg on the dash, even though the floating doodad is showing the correct level.

Even after driving and the msg goes away, it still has two LED type arrows pointing in from either end of the display, which I'm sure weren't there before (but the might have been, just can't remember)

So the Q is: does the warning have to be reset by someone with the gear? or have I got an airlock somewhere that has to be sorted.

PS: got the neighbour to have a look, but that was a waste of time, she doesn't know jack about the later model ones

What coolant are you using? And is the cable plugged in properly? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

The arrows are to indicate you have a warning message that you have read, but is still valid.

Or more than one message and you have not read them all

If you fix the issue, it will go away.

It will check level, and then the level if antifreeze in it, so if it's the right level but not enough antifreeze, the message will come up.

Check for air leaks by having the heater on highest setting and let it tick over with the cap off.

Water should complete the circuit when the air is out and the thermostat open....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Thanks for the replies, will do the open cap trick in the weekend and report back.

Coolant is green, will find the container and see what make it is.

The wee sender thing in the bottom of the tank seemed different to the original, put in the new one first, and then changed back to the original after the fault message but that didn't improve the situation.

Will post some pics of the new sender unit which has very tight shrink wrap over its top end, as the two water sensor bits seemed to be exposed to fluid I left the wrap in place, not too sure about that part.

Will also section the old tank to better understand how the sensor works, pics to follow but probably not until the weekend.

A problem shared is a problem halved!!!

That just made me smile.....a problem shared is a problem 2 people have Rolling with laughter

I was going to suggest you look at an IID Tool for fault diagnosis, but I think I prefer your neighbour.

Mine had a new rad just before I bought it, well it looks pretty new...

Checked mine the other day and found that it's just got water in there, totally clear and no taste to it!!!

I've stuck some rad flush in it and am going to sort it at the weekend and change the top hose...

Mine never came up with a warning light to say it didn't have anti freeze...

Or is that feature just on the later ones??

Seems strange. Think yours should work the same as mine Pete.

That said, mine only complained once about the mixture when I test drove it, and dealer had to fit a new rad....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Me again.

Cut open the header tank to have a look.

Interestingly the blue sender unit doesn't get in contact with the coolant, seems that the white float has a ring magnet in it that moves up and down and that magnetic current tells the sender what the level is.

I ended up putting the new sender back in after taking off the plastic shield on, don't do that, it holds various skinny bits of wire and some sort of resistor in place, anyway it didn't work first time round and still no go.

My replacement tank was a bearmach, and the sender style is a little different so will hunt out a blue one like the original.

One thing I did notice that is that the sputnik type thing on the top of the float can sieze in place with dry gunk (if the tank was allowed to sit around empty) and I imagine the float wouldn't be going anywhere after that.

Will get a mate who is better with electricity than I an to test the senders and see if putting a magnet around the pole makes them pass current
