Ride on Lawnmower Lawn Tractor

Hi guys

Hve just bough a house with 2.5 acres of lawn, I need something to cut the lawn. I have been round a few or my local garden machinery outlets and not unsuprisingly they all tell me the brand of mower/tractor that have is the best.

Any advice from those who have a lawn tractor/ride on mower would be much apperciated, any thing to look out for? models to avoid?

I am not wishing to spend more than £3k so currently thinking either John Deere X165 with collector, an X155r or Mountfield 1840H (5 year warranty) as they have the 2 cylinder engine (I have a couple of slopes so probably need the twin cylinder)

Not sure if I need to collect all year round or mulch the grass during the summer, but would collect in autumn to get the leaves off the grass.

Andrew,
I have a Countax C600H. It has a PTO at the back which works with various attachments. Within my garden are 18 oaks which generate 3 -5m3 of leaves annually. The grass collector sweeps the leaves (best when dry) which i then chop down for composting with a 42inch cutter-deck.
I also have various attachments, scarifier, sorrel roller, 38inch mulching deck, broadcast spreader all used through out the year. My SCH plastic trailer has moved everything around.
I bought all from Fairlawn in Kent (Alan) with the exception of the scarifier from Hugh Page in Sussex.
Both were open for negotiation on all - Alan especially as he has also supplied 2 further units to neighbours over here.
Good luck

Got about the same amount of ground but mine has a few fairly steep slopes - had a Countax, pile of rubbish and heavy on fuel. Replaced it with a Stiga out front mower (4wd and diesel) great bit of kit. Frank Nicol in Dingwall are local dealers but I tend to go to Inverurie - guy in service dept there is very helpful and knows what he is talking about.

Bought mine as an ex council machine on ebay (£1800 plus £175 for pallet delivery from Devon) and apart from a new set of belts and engine services it has needed nothing. Its a mulching deck so as long as you keep grass short no clippings to collect.

Agree with Stan's choice, the only mowers you can eat at the end of the growing season.

I had a Countax C600H. Thumbs Up Pretty good, only thing I discovered was that after the clippings pile got large, emptying the collector was a pain. Friend had an Iseki with a lifting device to empty the clippings. More expensive but all round better quality. Diesel. Bigger. If you can afford it I'd suggest you take a look.

If you have slopes., go for 4WD.

Thanks for the suggestions, most of the mower are a bit more than I have to spend unless I can find one second hand. Would love to get a diesel. Anything I should look out for on a second hand?

Stan/Oldcro sheep were considered, as I have a field which I have horses in (another 2 acres), but they deposit too much for me to let them on the lawn. They do eat all the grass clipings from my 18" cut mower

I have 2.5 acres of trees so do need something which will pick up the leaves in the autumn, don't think anything with a front deck would work

Kiter - I work in Dingwall, so I pass FrankNicol every day, they have suggested the Mountfield, MacGregor forest and ground care suggested the John Deere. Neither dealer suggested the other brands they do.

I do have an Iseki 2160TX compact tractor, but it has a backhoe (pain in the arse to remove), so grass topper is an option, but not ideal 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

I have a John Deere - hasn't missed a beat in 3 years and parts seem very cheap relative to the competition. 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

I needed one for the current place and didn't want to spend Countax money, I bought a Craftsman, US Brand, same machine as sold under Husqvarna.

42" twin blade cut
centre chute for grass removal (doesnt clog up like side exits)
Hydrostatic gearbox
Mulch and collect system
