quad hid xenon headlights

has anyone here put quad hid xenon headlights on the range rover?

if yes how did you do the wiring to get the dip beam (dims) to work on the lights fitted to the high beam light?

hi stan

i did and that is where i got the idea from to do the fogs and also the high beams.

however daveo's high beam is only that - high beam. theres a guy who actually convert both the main (dipped) and high beam lights into main (dipped) beams and high beams (brights).

this way when you put your lights on dipped beam, all 4 lights are on and the same for the high beams.

have a look here: http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=40197&page=3

i agree that there is enough light - but when is enough enough Laughing

also just looking at possible ways to make it a bit different

remember, i stay in Africa where night driving is complicated with animals that prefer sleeping in the road - some areas don't have fences to keep the animals of the road - so yes the more light the better

hi

i had a look at it - however prefer having the standard look when the lights are off

will see if it will be necessary to anything more after i've put on the hid kit on the high beams

Rolling Eyes HID bulb in Parabolic reflectors don't work Evil or Very Mad yes you get what looks like at first more light but it's simple geometry that proves this wrong .
The parabolic reflector in cars and bikes for that matter is designed to gather the light from a specifically shaped light source ,ie a halogen bulb . Bunging an HID bulb in there gives a different shaped light source which the reflector then proceeds to skater all over the place blinding other driver along the way and giving no improvement in light penetration or ever worse light penetration .
I'm surprised more effort is not taken to stamp out this potentially dangerous and selfish practice but I supose as more and more people do it other people just have to put up with it and suffer in silence . Whistle Mad

Now I suppose some of the clever clogs here are going to argue that they will only be used in high beam and as such won't inconvenience other road users but that is missing the point about them not working very well in the first place and my comments are about the practice in general so please don't do it Thumbs Up 2008 MY Supercharged

@axle - your concerns are noted.

The bulbs i intend using are specifically developed for the "normal" type headlight lenses; i.e. the issues you raised will be taken care of.

If that does not work i will consider getting projectors made for this purpose.

I've put hid kits on both the high beam and fog lights (6000k bulbs with 55W fast start ballasts) - what a difference these lights make - just the fogs on almost makes the original lights redundant

have done some night driving and had no complaints from other drivers re the fog lights - thus I am accepting that it does not blind them.

will put up some pictures as soon as I get the car back from the dealer (its in for replacement of front suspension bushes and rear control arms) - fortunately at the cost of the selling dealer.

SA is not the only place that has wildlife on the road issues. We have had a few incidents in NZ (cows and a horse) on the road at night. In Oz the kangeroos, emus, camels are also notorious and not to forget the wombats (apparently they are so sturdy and stocky, they cause 4wds to flip over when they are run over). In Sweden and Canada the moose are responsible for quite some road accidents etc. etc.

The fact that we hardly see it in Europe is actually quite sad, because it means there is little wildlife around. For the Europeans and NZers it is mainly escaped cattle that cause issues and not even that often I think.

There is another post on here of a L405 owner that has some pretty inconspicuous looking LED lights that apparently throw out a lot of light (cost about 295 GBP). They could fit into your lower brake cooling grilles and look like standard daytime running lights. Maybe Stan can help as I remember him responding on that post.

I would also consider adding light to the front in countries where it is justified and would also like for the car to look completely standard during the day and have floodlights at night !!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

How are you keeping the lenses clean?
Does your car have headlight washer/wipers as standard?
I thought HID equipped cars had to have these to keep the lenses clean as you get nasty refraction from dirty ones.
I know retrofitting is a nono hear in NZ.

The WOF in NZ is quite critical about that and rightfully so. Adrian is correct, that some countries require the HID headlights have either wiper/washer or washer to stop refraction. Poor people that meet me head on on the motorbike sure as hell won't have that advantage (although I do tend to keep the headlight quite clean).

I'd better start looking at the NZ rules if we move back there end of the year (we're considering going back there for a few years), although my FFRR is still absolutely standard.

I would still add some lights like the LEDs to it, a bit out of sight if possible but still have them. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
