Irregular HVAC behaviour

My air con has not been as effective this year, particularly in holding temperature and quick cooling.

Since I have had the car if you put it to 16degrees on a hot day it would speed up all the fans and blast cold air. Now it does nt do much, if I put it to max ice cold air comes out, it's as if the face vents are nt venting correctly too. I am having to fiddle with the manual controls instead if just leaving in auto like I normally do.

The fan is working and speeds up with the controls but it's not right. It's as if it's struggling to recognise the ambient temperature and that the heater controls are not fully engaging the face vents.

I am driving the car to the south of France in a couple of weeks and could do with it working. Any feedback appreciated. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

I recently got my aircon performance checked and regassed at Halfords, as it had'nt worked at all from when I got the FF a year and a half ago. They have a deal on at the moment where they'll do a free performance test and check over for free...if it passes that, they regas the aircon for £49.00. That's all it cost me and now I've got full aircon.
May just need regassing if it is part working.
Worth a try Thumbs Up

From what you describe it's possible the ac system isn't able to read the internal temperature in the car due to the internal air temperature sensor being insulated due to dirt build up. The sensor is located on the back of the upper section of the central lower dash below the ac control knobs. You can see the small intake grille for the sensor next to the manual vent settings. The sensor works by a small integral fan drawing air from the car thro the grille so it's also possible the fan is not functioning.

Thanks for the replies. The air coming out is cold and I can chill the car so I don't think it needs gassing. Was all serviced at land rover dealer last year.

I have cleaned the little grill as the was dust/fluff on the bars.

On my old merc it has primitive climate control, the test for the air temp sensor was a piece of tissue paper against the grill it would hold in place from the draw. Perhaps I should try that. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

After several hours in the car I have more of an understanding of the issue. The manual heater buttons for the face, feet, windscreen don't make any difference to air flow. The fault is intermittent. Some times the faces vents work and other times they don't. The fan speed however does, I can hear it working but it's not pushing air out with any forces on full speed. Got a bit warm today. Could this be the FSR? 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

Mine did that for a while, i cleaned the little vent out with a can of air duster from a plumbers merchant, compressed air in a tin with a straw nozzle.

Push nozzle in a bit and blow the crud around for a while.

Worth a go for a couple of squids before taking it apart. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks. There was a lot of dust around the little grille, will try the can of air !

Did some tests today. Put a temp and humidity reader in the car. Left on max cooling for about 10 minutes. It reduced the ambient temp from 20 to 15 and humidity from 90 to 52%. The vents were all working ok. My 2000 trip across France next week will give me time to work out what's going on. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE

Tried cleaning the temp sensor with compressed air but no change.

If I start the car the air con is working, albeit very cold and it seems the temp is not adjustable. After about 15 mins the car become noticeably warmer, the flow of air from vents is restricted and a mist comes out of the centre vents. I turn off the air con off for about 5-10mins and then back on. It will work again for a period of time and I repeat the process.

A colleague thought it could be the temp sensor on the evaporator. That it is freezing up, restricting air flow. When turned off it melts the ice, it's clears and works again.

I have tried googling but not much in relation to these cars. Anyone know how easy to get to the evaporator sensor, is it a dash out type job from hell?

Thanks. 2012 4.4TDV8 VSE
