I suppose if you buy/sell through dealers only, then the tax system is the same. But it does stuff up the private used market a bit, how do you tax a vehicle you buy in a village with no 3G signal?

Very good. I do like Sniff Petrol. (note the word "to" is not in that sentence !)

Good point.

I did read somewhere that there was to be a "period of grace" for existing owners who forget to renew their tax, but whether this carries over to new owners also ?

And if you have to be the registered keeper to tax a car do you have to wait for all the docs to be returned first ? Though that bit hasn't changed from the old system I suppose.

I would imagine that you will owe from the start of the month when the car is bought, and the DVLA will charge you accordingly.

I am sure there will be a few unhappy motorists at the side of the road being talked to by Her Majesty's finest before it all gets ironed out.

......but if you have to have tax and MOT to insure a car, there must be a period of grace from when a car is re-registered to a new keeper ? Suppose that will stay just like it is now. The car will still be taxed by the seller until the DVLA get the docs for new keeper....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

you have to have MOT and insurance to tax a car, but you don't need proof of tax and Mot to insure a car.........

So you could turn up in said village to buy a car, phone up insure it, get the docs emailed to you, drive to the local post office with the mot and a printout of the insurance (not sure if they will accept a PDF on phone....) and tax the car, If you got stopped you would probably get sent to buy tax........ and as soon as you did they would let you on your way.... i reckon... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Given that numberplate recognition cameras are to be used to police vehicle tax in future I can see a lot of illegible/dirty number plates appearing on cars in the near future. Thumbs Up

This is how it works. Any check on the number plate will show it is taxed until DVLA receive V5 with new keeper details.

Seller does not get refund until DVLA receive V5 with New Keeper details.

Therefore buyer has taxed car for a few days until DVLA get the V5.

Thumbs Up

What ? Mot and insurance to tax a car ? Laughing it's been a long day for me....... I knew what I meant Rolling with laughter

I would imagine that the databases / DVLA would not be aware of a vehicle being sold until the paperwork caught up to them, so as long as the seller had the car taxed when you bought it, the systems would still have the car taxed so you would not get pulled over, though I think the DVLA will be issuing fines directly, if I understand it right.

You will still be able to check online when a cars tax expires....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Yes but it took me nearly 10 minutes to type that, going back and forward correcting the errors that the Jesus Pad Air had put in. It has no concept of the DVLA and thinks it's a DVD.

Hi, was wondering if there was a discussion on tax disc's and here I am!
So if I've got this right, if you buy a car, you have to tax it, thats OK, but if your going to loose up to a month by taxing an already taxed car, surely new buyers are going to leave the taxing bit until the first of the month? Also as a seller you will not get the tax refund until DVLA have changed the V5. The last car that I brought took 6 weeks for the V5 to come through. So as a seller you could loose 2 months tax, this appears to be a wee bit flawed to me. In-fact thinking about it, it was about 5 weeks to receive the conformation that I'd traded the old car in.
Now 2 months loss of tax for me is about £50, but I feel for all you ffrr drivers that have to pay £500 a year, you stand to loose a considerable chunk of dosh. I can see this being reflected in resale prices! Also I can see this leading to Dvla getting hammered by V5 changes at the end of each month, followed by 3 weeks of nothing. This feels like a pole tax thing to me! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Hmmm, just a thought, but what happens if you buy a car that has been SORNed by the previous owner?

It wont have any tax on, so do you have to get the vehicle transportered home and then wait for DVLA to receive the V5 before you can get it taxed?

I would imagine it will be similar to now, in that the DVLA will back date to the date the vehicle was purchased when they get the V5. So as long as the seller has it taxed when you pick the car up, the databases will still flag it as taxed, so you will be fine. You will then pay tax from purchase date, backdated from when they get the paperwork, and the seller will get their refund at that point.

Of course that seems logical to me, so they will probably operate it differently Whistle

As highlighted above though, that won't help you if it's sorn. But then, how does it operate now ? Databases are still the same. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
