gearbox sticking in gear

just accelerated getting up to speed on the motorway, gears seamed slow to change, revs got to about 2100 and slowly
changed gear at 70mph. when i looked in the rearview mirror there was a big cloud of smoke which cleared. i had only squeezed the throttle, i didn't boot it and it was in drive not sport.
i've only had the range rover 2 months, 2010 tdv8 Vogue with 63000 miles.
i'll take it back to dealers, but wondered if anyone could shed some light on what may be wrong.
wondered if it may need a change of gearbox oil. Confused

That sounds as if you've got some water in your fuel system, was the tank on low? And can you get it to do it again?
I'm not sure if there's a water sensor in the fuel filter, if there is you should have some indication on the dash, most probably on the screen of Doom! If you can't get it to repeat the action, I'd put it down to a wee drop of bad fuel that the engine didn't like, and promptly dumped down the exhaust. Resulting in a momentary loss of power causing the gear box to hold the higher gear, longer, before changing up.
It doesn't take much water to make smoke, number one!
Water can collect in the bottom of the tank, over the years, this is mainly due to the moisture content that's present in all fuels. Unfortunately if you use a low volume garage, you can get a little more moisture than you might have bargained for. It can be just a simple case of fitting a new filter, as the water collects in the bottom, oil being lighter than water (physics 101). At the worst case you'll need the tank draining to remove the water, but I wouldn't worry about that unless it keeps on doing it. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

i have half a tank of fuel, i have been using shells more expensive diesel from a shell garage on a main road.
i will try to make it do it again on my way home tomorrow, no fault lights.
i will see if i can see a sensor on the fuel filter or a problem with the turbo hose.
booked it in to the dealer on monday anyway, it's good to have an idea of what may be the cause if they don't.

dealers had car for two days, couldn't find problem with gearbox.
they have a bulletin for smoke issue. something about needing to modify turbo hose.
dealers needs car for three days. loan car and land rover picking up tab.
booked in for 11-13th nov.
next problem iPod link sound quality. Big Cry

You'll probably find that the engine smoke problem has caused the gearbox to hold the gear change, and there is, fingers crossed, nothing up with the box. Just not enough engine to make it change! The gearbox is governed by the speed that the car is going, and effort that the engine uses to maintain that gear. If you have a loss of power, but you've still got the same throttle setting, or increasing, the gearbox thinks your going up a hill (for example) and holds the gear change longer. Power loss can also show up as a refusal to 'kick down' under heavy acceleration.
So be positive buddy, it's not the box it's the engine, and that's in the hands of the stealer's now Shocked . OK so I can see some grounds to worry, hopefully it's a recall issue and not a wallet bashing issue, I've got them crossed for you bud Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... i was thinking the same, if they sort the smoke issue that gearbox fault will disappear, fingers crossed.
land rover are paying 100% of cost of repair. Thumbs Up
just need to be patient now, booked in for 11-13th nov.
