Fuel Gauge - Not sure if it's working properly

As mentioned, the previous owner of our rrv told me that the fuel gauge was dicky. His daughter ran out of diesel, when it was still showing half a tank. The AA came out and said there was no diesel in it

He told me that the gauge doesnt go under half a tank. Now, when I picked it up yesterday, the guage was showing empty. I put £50 in and it went straight up to half way.

Since picking the car up, I've done 208 miles. Working on a 22 gallon tank doing 20 to the gallon, that's 440 miles approx to a tank, or 220 to half a tank. The gauge at this point is showing quarter of a tank and the OBC is saying "range- 152 miles". I find it hard to believe that I'm going to get a further 150 miles out of it, so I'm starting to think the guage is duff.

My Questions are:
1) Does the OBC read off the fuel sender in the tank, which I suspect is the main problem
2) IS there a way of testing this, before stripping the tank out of the car.

Best way is to do your own workings

Fill up drive say 200 miles Fill up again work out mpg and fuel gauge at the same time Thumbs Up

Its easier to do proper calculations when you fill it to the brim.

Try that and then see. Discovery 4 HSE

As it's showing quarter full now, I may just pop down in the morning and fill it and see how much I get in. In theory, being a 22 gallon tank, I should be able to get 15-16 gallons in, meaning there's still 5-6 left, which will give me a good idea of how accurate the gauge is. If I manage to get 22 gallons in, there's deffo something wrong! Confused

It probably is right- if the sender is stuck at quarter of a tank, it will always show "152 miles" left, even when it's about to run out.

Right then- I've just been and filled it up. It was showing quarter full with 167 miles range (it was 152 yesterday!)
I managed to get 73 litres in, so on a 22 gallon/100 litre (approx) tank, I must have had 27 litres left.

However

When I got back into the car, the fuel gauge went to between 1/2 and 3/4 full. Range showed 377 miles Shocked

I'm guessing there's something wrong somewhere. Everything else works fine, so this is just a minor inconvenience. The gauge is obviously getting it's info from the sender in the tank, so I'll tackle that job in the summer.

Noddy, i've got a 2004 4.4 petrol. no matter how hard i try i can never get the gauge to read full. It always stops halfway between 3/4 and full. When i drive it the top half of the tank seems to disappear in no time at all and I am usually sceptical about the indicated range but it always seems to work out almost right. What I have noticed is that when the gauge hits 0 there is always at least 80 miles range showing and it seems to be accurate. I have never had the bottle to go more than halfway between 0 and the end stop but there does seem to be an awful lot of needle travel below 0. Maybe they put the backing legend on in the wrong place and thats the problem.

Hmmmm... strange. I think the only way to really test these cars is to carry a gallon of diesel and run it till it stops, although I don't fancy doing that!

The electrical fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank in the left hand side of the tank.
The pump transports fuel from the fuel swirl pot towards the "engine" and operates the syphon jet pumps in the left
and right sides of the tank. Both syphon jet pumps deliver fuel to the fuel swirl pot in the right side of the tank.
The pump is controlled by the ECM via the fuel pump relay.

Should the fuel pump electrical connection need to be disconnected, it is imperative that the ignition should be
switched off. If the ignition is on in any position the fuel gauge will memorise its last needle position prior to power
down. Once power is restored the gauge will display the last remembered position regardless of the actual level of
fuel in the tank. This could result in incorrect fuel gauge readings if the fuel tank has been drained and not filled worth
exactly the same quantity of fuel that was removed. onto no6 Range Rover

Thing is, it does read up to a point. It's showing just under 3/4 full at the moment with a full tank and won't drop until it's actually got 3/4 of a tank left, if that makes sense

So what's the fix then?

Hard battery reset would normally route out "strange in discrepancies" certainly the first thing to do in diagnosing this type of issue Thumbs Up

I always thought it was never a good idea to deliberately run out of diesel? I can't quite remember the reasons why. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

I think it leads to air locks in the fuel system and you have to have the whole thing primed again. =expensive.
