My First Range rover advice please

Hi guys Im new to this forum Very Happy , I currently have an Audi TT but Im looking to change to a Range rover Td6 I have around 20k to spend so should be able to get one with a fairly low mileage, Just wondering what I should look out for as I'v heard a few horror stories about land rover reliablity. Im looking for a vogue model in black with cream or blue leather and all the toys including sat nav.

Also im looking to get the car full facelifted to the 2010 spec straight away once I buy It has anyone done this? How were the results and can anyone recommend a good place to have this carried out in scotland or northern england?

This will be my first Land Rover and first 4x4 so what sort of running costs would I be expecting

Heres a picture of my current TT although most of you probably wont be interested Laughing

To give you an idea I was asking 20k for mine.

So for 20k you should get a late (55 plate-ish) Td6 with the facelift, meaning it looks later and has a different interior to the ones made six months or so before. Around 60k to 70k miles with a full main dealer history.

The above is what mine is, so that is what you should be able to find... unless you want blue with cream leather... in which case... Wink Laughing

Running costs on a Td6 are quite good.
I average 30mpg (or a little over), tyres last over 35k miles and an annual service (or 15k miles) is about 500 pounds. Td6 are generally before March 06 so you get the cheaper road tax at about 250 instead of 450 for a later one. All in all, I find it quite cheap for a big luxury vehicle.

Hello andy180 - Welcome, forum member Fox is, isn't, is, isn't, is selling his apparently?

(I think it all depends what day of the week it is Whistle )

EDIT - Sorry Fox, you beat me to responding Rolling Eyes Laughing

It isn't Black but sought after Cairns Blue and in excellent condition.

Not sure about Black with Blue interior though - can't imagine their are many in that combo.

Forum sponsors DCC4x4 have a good reputation for the 2010MY upgrade (but i'm sure you already know this if you have been doing your research) I'm sure they will do a competitve price for you if you consider travelling down South - they reckon they can do the transformation within a couple of days.

Mpg figures should be around 25mpg and insurance I would think are similar to what you have been paying for the TT - same with servicing costs etc.

Make sure anything you buy has a full main dealer or LR specialist service record and always check the suspension for any sagging or raising /lowering faults when viewing/test driving car

Good luck - if you do go for the 2010MY upgrade it would be nice to see some before ,during and after photos Thumbs Up

Thanks for the quick replys guys I was looking for a bit lower than 60-70,000 my TT has only covered 40,000 so I'd be looking for something with a similar mileage to that

I already viewed a 2002 vogue with 50,000 in dark blue at a local garage and I really liked the blue leather with cream piping, however they were looking for £18,500 which I felt was overpriced for the age and I dont really want a blue one as I love black cars

Is there a massive difference apart from the obvious look between the 02-05 and facelift? Is the facelift better quality and more reliable?

Is there any other particular common faults I should look out for which could cost me a lot to repair?

The running costs seem similar to the TT which I currently get 28mpg with and the insurance on the rangie is actually cheaper because they class the TT as a performance car

The Facelift has the more modern DVD based touch screen nav which also does cool things like display off road wheel rotation and stuff as far as I know?.
Going from a TT to a TD6 will be a bit of a difference in performance terms to say the least Wink

Welcome to the forum andy, if you search there is the Buying Used article from last weeks Autocar mag posted in one of the threads and that will give you a good idea of what to look out for with the L322 Range Rover. Don't be too worried about high miles as these cars can take them and hide the miles very well if they are looked after. There were problems with early ones blowing front diffs - both the launch versions had BMW engines and they are as reliable as any other BMW unit, later cars have Jaguar and Ford/PSA Group engines re-engineered to suit Land Rover's needs. Land Rover is still honouring replacement front diffs claims as they were caused by a design fault. Watch out for cars that have been heavily offroaded - yes folks do take them off the tar and they are very very good in the rough stuff but they can suffer damage underneath. I don't think the Black with Blue leather was ever an option but there are loads of Black with Ivory or Parchment around. Have you thought about an early V8 Supercharged? OK the fuel consumption is frightening (anything between 9mpg and 15 on a good day!) but if you don't do a lot of annual miles they are great value used. As mentioned above full main dealer or specialist service history is everything and don't even think about going to a non Land Rover specialist forecourt to buy one - Range Rover, like all Land Rovers (including the low tech ones) are complex machines that really need a skilled/knowledgable person to look after them. There are plenty out there so don't fall in love with the first one you see................................... and there are other colours than Black!
Oh and one thing, don't buy any car you see that has bigger than 19" wheels as the transmission on early cars was not designed to take bigger wheels, even now the biggest wheel recommended by LR is a 20"

Audi TT to TD6 RR.......................... you will find you have to change your driving style a bit, but a Range Rover is a great car just to sit back in and let the world waft by while you sit back in your great big comfortable arm chair admiring the fantastic view out - it really is like sitting in an expensive leather clad armchair in a lounge with fantastic moving views outside the windows 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

yeah the performance is going to be quite different as my TT's top speed is 151mph compared with 111mph or the Range Rover but I'v always loved the Range Rovers looks Its so imposing and the Interior is so luxurious, If only I could afford to have both Sad

I considered the supercharged and the 4.4 but I think they are just way too greedy on fuel and I do around 8,000 a year which isnt massive but would still be considerably more than the TT driving that sort of mileage

I'll probably look for black with ivory or cream leather then and I'll definately hang out for a facelift model. Im fairly fussy about servicing and always like cars with a good history and low mileage

Did Land Rover not offer larger alloys as an option? I really like this style of overfinch alloy and was considering fitting these , would these not be suitable at all? what sort of problems could I encounter fitting these?

On pre 2006 cars you got your warranty invalidated if you were found to be running bigger than 19's, after 2006 20's became the "big" wheel. You can fit 26" wheels if you want to but the running gear isn't designed to hadnle them and you will also get a lot of engine vibration from the TD6 transmitted into the cabin running on bigger than 19" wheels. I would save the almost £3k of those wheels and put it aside for something else - you will find the ride on 18 and 19" wheels is almost magic carpet - you hear potholes but rarely feel them on those wheels as the sidewalls absorb the bumps. You see (and there are people here with them ) bigger wheels on their cars, they are prepared to accept the slightly worse ride for the looks. Just remember RR is the best part of 3 tonnes and the less rubber you have on the road the more damage you are likely to do to the rims, also any wheels/tyres you buy you must check they are weight rated rather than speed rated for the FFRR. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Honestly???

I have 3 x doubts on this one...

1) The advert states it is the facelift model - but I am suspicious of the front grill - it appears that the correct grille has been fitted but it isn't fitted flush ( I assume it is mounted on top of the old spec lights) or does the top of the bumper dip where the grille fits - Take a look at a photo of a genuine facelifted model.

2) If I am correct (as above) then the price is a bit high I feel for a 54 plate car - even with a low 40K miles.

3) RRS wheels?

Its probably a good car but it isn't presented / advertised correctly IMHO

@ delamo:

Correct on point #1. Facelift grille fitted over old style headlights - you can clearly make out the wiper arms fitted to them.

Looks like a touchscreen inside though?!? Was touchscreen fitted to the first edition, or only on facelift ('05 reg onwards)?

Confused

It has got old spec lights, as it has wipers.

And the rear lights could be wrong, as I thourght they indroduced clear indicators on the face lifts.

Something defo not right

Cheers dantheman for concurring Smile

Yes - some crossover models were fitted with touchscreen that early...

... then some were fitted with touchscreen and facelifted (correctly),

... then with additional restyled centre console,

finally being fully transformed with introduction of TDV8 engine option - all occuring at 6 month intervals between 54plate and 56plate registrations
