New U/J problems....

They say truth is stranger than fiction.... you couldn't make this stuff up...

Had new Hip (U/J) fitted on afternoon of Wed 17th Dec,woke up after op and was in no pain, actually thought they hadn't done it... Nurse said wait till tomorrow when the anesthetic has worn off!! well no pain the next day either, out of bed, bit of physio and it's working great, very little discomfort when walking with sticks...

(It's a weird sensation, as they have cut the bone off the top of the leg and replaced it with steel, your brain doesn't know where your leg is in relation to the rest of you.... you "think" it's in a certain position but when you look at it, it's somewhere else.... that's why you need sticks.... apparently takes a while for the brain to relearn...)

Walked out of Hosp on Friday afternoon a happy chappy....

Always a bit bunged up after all the drugs etc so didn't do a number two till Sunday and (sorry if your eating) there was a lot of blood in it.... Back into Hospital Monday after several more bloody toilet visits.... They decided I should stop taking the anti-inflamatories as this was causing the bleeding along with the blood thinning meds they give you to prevent DVT which is the biggest risk with joint replacement... So stopped taking them and all was well....

Christmas eve.... my Mother came to stay over the holidays, brought her aging Whippet who is not getting to the back door quick enough these days... result.... big lake of dog Censored in the middle of the kitchen floor.. in walks me (without sticks) slipped on Censored and did the one thing they say you really shouldn't do... twist the new joint... threw myself onto the worktop to try to stop the rotation but the damage was done.... Very acute pain and hip will take no weight at all.... worse than it was the first day...

Back in hosp again.... two X-rays later and lots of fussing and they declare nothing broken, dislocated or shifted... back home again on crutches....

Over the next few days the hip got better, but.... because I'm now taking no medication for my other probs (I have been taking anti-inflamatories for some years) the other hip, my back, both knees and also both ankles start to seize up.... my knees are burning if I walk to the toilet and the pain is getting silly....

Couldn't do much over the weekend but was at my Dr's Monday morning to see if anything could be done... he checks the anti-inflamatories they gave me against the blood thinning meds and find that they are shown to clash, so bit of a cock up there.... the old ones I was on are shown to clash as well but he said "give it a go and stop if you start bleeding again" the advice is to keep taking the blood thinning under any circumstances as there is a real chance of DVT's... so, tried 1/2 dose of my old pills and so far so good, it has eased up the other joints and at least I can get to the toilet without too many problems....

First time in years I've been med free and it does show how bad the other hip and both knees are (pretty sure the ankles are just moaning for the sake of it as they have calmed down a lot)

Hip is now back to where it was, pain free, taking full weight and my foot now points forward instead of 60deg to the side (some will have noticed my Daffy Duck impersonation if you've seen me walking lately...)

So looks like this is going to take a while as they work their way round replacing all the knackered U/J's..... Pete

Blimey Pete, what a Christmas you have had! Glad that you seem on the mend now though. Hopefully 2015 will bring you better luck and any further work on new UJ's will be a bit less eventful!

Cheers,

Shocked Sounds like a sketch from Benny Hill. Laughing

Hope you start to get better.

What blood thinning medication are you on? I'm currently on Wafarin and Fragamin injections. Si. <This is my name.

Very best wishes on your - steady ! - recovery.
You're not alone. I slipped in the shower the day after back surgery. That smarted a little as well.
We assume the dog didn't make it . . .

I know a tyre fitter who was back at work two weeks after a hip replacement. It can be done !

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Thanks guys....

As I said, the best bit of me is the new hip... it's the rest that's had it.....

Can't really blame the old dog, he's a sweet thing and great company for mum, she hasn't stopped appologising on his behalf though...!!!! Pete

Blimey Pete! I thought I had been in the wars with my hosp visits!!

Years ago I was given a drug to help resolve one of my issues (Bendroflumethiazide I think it was or something sounding the same) and it starts giving me headaches after a few weeks that just got worse and worse until one day I couldn't even bare to get out of bed Sad ended up stopping taking them and the next visit to the specialist he took some persuading but agreed to sign me off them and allow me to try an alternative method which has worked pretty well most of the time. If things get worse mind and I have to go back on it then I'll be a bit stuffed and end up on dla or such as there is no way I can work with that, I was off for a month at that point waiting for two weeks to see him Sad

Let's just hope a new year is a new medical fresh slate for all of us! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Ouch Pete, wishing you a speedy and full recovery in 2015

Only thing like it that's ever happened to me was a knee op some years ago. Absolutely fine after the op, up and walking round on crutches etc

That evening when I swung my left leg off the bed to get up and the ankle-to-thigh cast slipped down about an inch.

The full weigh of the cast ended up resting on my newly operated kneecap!! Immense pain only relieved by an emergency morphine injection until they could cut the cast off..... 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!
