apart from the alloy style
the tyres have to hv the same rolling diameter, a tyre guru and fellow FF owner local to me 'tyreman @ Charles street wv13, advised me this as I had 22" alloys with no spare.

check this site to calculate compatible tyres

http://www.tyretraders.com/Tyres_Calculator.aspx

my 285/35 r22 = to my 18 255/60 r18 with 0.65% ratio difference.

I've now got a set of 5x 18 winter wheels so I have a spare for my 22's too

now different size nuts, pcd, offsets that's something else

Just roll the dice, never carried a spare in the FF, just a couple of cans of the foam stuff.

Wow, the money saved in fuel economy without that deadweight spare, must far outweigh the recovery charge on a motorway, and subsequent genuine spare and tyre replacement before release from yard etc. A couple of cans of glue will only fill a slow leak you might find arriving at your trusty steed in the morning, and you still have to fill it up with air! That takes as long as changing it for a garuanteed return home at full speed. I have an LPG tank in my wheel well, AND a disco3 space saver fitted upright on the left in the boot. I use a set of steel type nuts to fit it. I can only drive it at 60mph, but that's normal for me!

This is what I was thinking, the extra wheel I am carrying round is so damn heavy, I am wondering is it worth it and what is the alternative?

if you are worried about extra weight, then why not do as many do, and not fill fuel tank to brim unless a long journey. the extra weight or a full reserve driving round etc. just fill to halfway... im not sure of how much lighter the steel skinny spare wheel is, but it is a much thinner tyre, you do need suitable steel wheel tapered nuts etc.
