if you have had the front headlights 'facelifted.' then the old missing box wont fit behind the newer bigger type. , so you use a cone type AIR FILTER. like a K+N make, there will also be a smaller one tucked in behind it, under the bonnet panel. on a vertical pipe. as that pipe would normally have gone into old box too. it makes the engine a bit more roar-ey on foot down accelleration too. mine has one, but mine is a little loose, and should really be braced with a small tie-piece of metal to the bonnet slam panel, to stop it wiggling when driving on rough terrain. (from the jubille clamp. ) the filter connnects to the AFM or air flow meter, sometimes called 'mass airflow' or MAF thats the tube next to the cone, with a connector these are a little brittle inside, and so the sturdyness of the cone is to protect the MAF/AFM

ah - ok that explains it. Thanks. I have noticed it roars when accelerating but not as much as a friends 1989 Range Rover, that makes a proper loud V8 roar. |

your only drawback using the cone, is its ever so slight risk to water ingress against the enclosed type if you were wading in VERY deep water with a bow-wave, as the original would be drawing air from the inner wing (i think.) |

Thanks for the info regarding the bow wave, the only time this would happen is if I'm hit by a Tsunami. I don't off road or like to take the car in deep puddles/rivers |

So what is the best modification you can make to these 4.4v8 engines to make them sound like a monster? |
