Land Rover's Now Uninsurable

Just received a renewal notice for my FFRR and Evoque. I have been with Chubb for 3 years or more. It says:

'I must make you aware that Chubb wll no longer cover loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft to your Range Rover's from 22nd February 2015 unless they are fitted with an operational Category 5 Tracking System. Chubb are enforcing this on all current clients with Range Rovers due to a recent trend in thefts.'

I have spoke with the broker and this applies to all Land Rovers as far as Chubb is concerned.

I have a Tracker Locate fitted and this is a Cat 6 so not sufficient.

According to the broker, LR are fully aware of the situation but still fitting Cat 6 Trackers to their vehicles.

I am contemplating buying a new L405 later this year. I will watch how LR respond to this issue before making a final decision.

LR need to get this sorted!

Would anyone from LR care to comment on when a solution fo the ODB problem will be provided? MY23 D350 HSE

I am informed that other high worth insurers are adopting a similar strategy to insuring LR vehicles because they have been hit hard by recent losses.

My broker is locating an alternative but how long before they all insist on a Cat 6 tracker and/or the premiums rocket?

The issue here is with LR. We all know the problem exists yet they are doing little to resolve this fundamental issue as far as their customers are aware, yet they continue expect us to pay a premium for their products. MY23 D350 HSE

speaking as a tracker device layman, does the cat 5 or 6 tracker have its own battery supply? or does it rely on the cars 12v still being connected. i have always wondered if the thief would simply slide it up the recovery truck, and cut the battery lead, and sling a cover over it, or change the plates till its well away etc. then leave it in a pub cark park to be 'found'
ie to cool off...
it must need some supply to chirp out its whereabouts etc.

sad news about insurance though. mine had been getting cheaper last couple of years.....

The difference appears to be that the CAT 5 has Level 1 Police response and engine immobilisation.

The issue isn't with Land Rover per se, it's the fact that Range Rovers are desirable to thieves. Anything with keyless start is at risk (e.g. all the previous fuss about BMWs being stolen).

Agreed, suppose it's annoying for them when dealers in certain regions allow access to the criminals, who have the equipment made, which the Chinese copy, which is sold on eBay ...

Been surprised at how many street-parked ones have steering wheel locks fitted recently.

1. Change insurer.
2. Fit the BBS solution to "hide" the keyless module from the CAN.
3. LR are not responsible for the amount of scallies in the world. That would be government & police.

The thing is, customers have demanded keyless cars ever since the idea was first floated. And they also complain most vociferously and publicly about replacement keys having to come from the factory on 10 days lead time with a 400 quid price tag after having proven ownership of the vehicle. And even that would only lead to more violent thefts as people are attacked for their keys.

So, keys have to be cheap and programmable at the dealer. And then EU regulations insist that LR make the diagnostic software available to everyone, not just their own dealers and sadly that includes scallies.

Are you beginning to see this isn't exactly a LR issue ? I'd be delighted to hear everyone's ideas on how exactly LR can get round all the above. And of course, anything LR do implement becomes standard on all cars which is a small matter for criminals to get round.

The best security is aftermarket where each vehicle is different. Security in obscurity effectively.

Any reason the combined forces of the motor manufacturing industry haven't cracked this problem yet rather than customers taking the pain/expense?

Does LR have an excuse for producing one of the weakest security systems on the market when BMW etc. have had similar problems for years before LR released their keyless system?

Why don't LR retro fit a solution if its available?

Both my cars aren't even keyless in the sense you have to press the button to open them. Plus they don't provide anywhere for the key once you're in the vehicle so where's the advantage?
