Transmission fluid Change DIY question

I was just going to put the car in to have this done but after being under the car doing some other work i had a look at the the transmission and saw where the drain and fill bolts are etc and i know i have all the correct tools for the job. looked into it further online and actually looks straight forward enough.

just have 2 questions for anyone that has done this job

Is it worth buying some cheap atf fluid to fill and then drain out the box a few times before finally filling with the zf fluid ?

Will this do the job of measuring the transmission fluid temperature whilst changing the fluid ? I have saw some people using this when measuring the fluid but don't know how accurate it would be as it would be measuring the temperature of the plastic pan and not the actual fluid ?

You can't use cheap stuff to flush it through, about 1/2 the fluid stays inside so all you will do is add a quantity of the wrong oil in the box...

You need the temp of the oil, not the temp of the sump, which is metal not plastic, this will take some time to get to the temp of the oil within, it's better than nothing but not ideal....

Make sure you can undo the fill plug before you drain and remove the sump to change the filter, if you can't get it off, and it can be very tight, then your stuck. Don't take it all the way out with the engine off as a couple of ltrs will end up all over you.

Use a genuine filter, and a new gasket on the sump... Pete
