Hi guys

My Range Rover showed me the 'Engine System Fault'-message last week and lost power. The dealer told me to change the left hand Turbo, and quoted an incredible amount of money. And this without testing the EGR-valve and hoses...

So I wanted to ask if anyone has ever changed the Turbo himself..? I'm a mechanic myself, but I don't work on the job anymore. My first problem is how to reach the turbo, should I remove the left wheel case, or try it from above...?
I would like to check the turbo (removed) before I order a new one.


Any recommendations would be appreciated.

L/H turbo...

Needs the diff removed.
To remove the diff, the subframe needs lowered.
As the steering rack is bolted to the subframe, this needs disconnected.
And the engine is bolted to the subframe, so this needs supported.

Its not a quick, or particularly easy job

It took me best part of a day to remove both turbos at the side of the road

From memory, it took a day and a half to rebuild and get running again, though there were a few extra issues to contend with during the rebuild

Quick check of the top turbo hoses if you haven't already, the right hand side one splits under the webbing at the engine end.

Worth a check for 5 mins before diving into the turbos.

As stated above... Exhaust every other avenue first sir... Then if you do need the Turbo, do them as a pair! If one is failing then the other won't be far behind! The RH Turbo is relatively easy compared to the LH side which is a little more buried... If you can get the car on a two poster and you have a reasonable level of spanner wielding ability then you should be alright sir...
