This is my first proper post so please be gentle and yes I have tried searching for an answer, but I'm not that good with forums and have been unsuccessful. (Sorry this so long!)

I bought my 06 4.2 S/C (my first RR) and collected it form the Dealer on Thursday 9th April, and gently drove the 320ish miles back home. Over the next few days I probably only drove about 30 miles but then on Tuesday the 14th it was necessary to drive the 200 mile round trip to Exeter. About 15 miles into this drive I needed to overtake so I stood on the throttle. Initial kick down was OK, but when the revs passed 3750 gear changes were very harsh, then I lost drive completely & had a box full of neutrals. The engine revved smoothly to at least 5000, but I only regained drive when the revs dropped below 3500 and I drove gently. I tried experimental acceleration a few more times on the way up to Exeter and had similar results. An hour or so later we returned home, the car was amazing with no issues and reminded me why I had bought a Supercharged.
However, the following day I spoke to my local Indy about the incidents and arranged to have her plugged in for diagnostics.
Nothing remarkable showed up and nothing to do with the gearbox! They re-set the "adaptions" !??! so the car would learn my driving style, and I left after making an appointment for gearbox oil to be changed.

Oh what a mistake!!!!....All changes very, very harsh and slamming through the car and at very low speeds. No rhyme nor reason for the changes and soon brought up a Gearbox Fault warning on the dash & only allowed 4th gear. Took car back....re-set diagnostics again and performed a full transmission fluid change including both diffs.

Unfortunately this has not solved the problem like was hoped but did highlight a noisy & worn rear diff!! They advised changing the 'box and the diff!

Today I took the car to my local LR Dealership & they performed a transmission diagnostic with a ZF machine.....this showed a TCM fault, but they could not be definite, so they also advised changing the 'box!!

Now this is all very well BUT according to to LR the 06MY 6 speed gearbox is NOT available anywhere in the world, and probably won't be..... even as a factory recon!!
As for the diff, it's even worse because apart from being unavailable world wide (an apparent problem with supply of the casings) they have NO listings for the component part numbers.

Now yes I can have the 'box rebuilt by a specialist, but what about the TCM, if this is the fault, which is apparently inside the casing?? But is there any point if I cannot rebuild the diff!!??!!

Surely there MUST be an ongoing way to maintain these wonderful cars.... mine has only just done 64K miles and to scrap it because of a worn out rear diff is ridiculous...!!

Yes I know I can return the car to the dealer for a full refund, but that is not the point......what about everyone else with these problems in the future??
If I am being daft with this and have I lost the plot, please advised accordingly?

Hi from my previous experience for what it's worth you really really shouldn't reset the gearbox adaptations as this is very dangerous and normally means a full rebuild/new gearbox. They don't like it I learnt this at my expense. Sorry it's not more positive news. The difference between theory and reality is that in theory it will work.

This highlights my many many posts on changing diff oils!

Can i ask, have you been to a Main Dealer for a software update? When i had an SC some time ago my local MD had mine in for some updates and managed to screw my gearbox up completely! Scared me senseless!!! Took it back in and they did some software stuff! And "voila" back to changing perfectly!

Well worth a try!

Thanks for the replies so far.
It would appear that Midland Automatic Transmissions can and will do a complete rebuild on the 'box including the "Magnetronics??" TCM which "could" be the fault according to my Indy.

However, the rear diff appears to be another matter.....nobody seems able to rebuild it so far!! The diff in mine is part no: TVK500311 and according to L/R was fitted to all vehicles with the AJ V8 (both 4.4 & 4.2 S/C) from 2002?? to 2009. It is NOT compatible with the diesel TD6 nor later TDV8s! ( yes we all know that the AJ was not fitted that early on!)

I have not spoken to Bristol Transmissions tomorrow but will tomorrow.

No I have not had a software update and no they did not offer me one. I will ask the question tomorrow, thank you.

The reason that the diff issue became apparent when we had the car on the lift for the transmission oil change was that the car was fully lifted beforehand with the wheels being driven in different gears and at different revs. When you are stood beneath the car when it is being "driven" like this it exposes all kinds of issues.

Unfortunately I would say that previous owners had probably NOT changed the diff oil regularly even though Main Dealer serviced! Yes I did have genuine liquid gold L/R fluids used.

So was the diff not making a noticeable noise in the cabin.

Hi Mark,

A combination of 22" cart wheels with Khumo 285/35/22 rubber bands making peculiar harmonics and not knowing the vehicle masked the rumble of the diff. Now I know it's there you can easily hear it on gentle driving.
Strangely enough the gearbox appears to have settled down to how it was when I collected her, apart from when in 4th it stays in 4th until you manually select 5th & 6th.

Unfortunately my love affair with the RR 4.2 S/C has been very short lived, more like a one night stand really!

The dealer is recovering her back to his premises in Tunbridge Wells next week because he has refused to pay to sort the gearbox issue!!

When I have received my refund in full, I will post pictures of her so other members can be aware if they are viewing, because this dealer will, I am sure, attempt to offload her onto another unsuspecting punter!!
