How to find out Gearbox serial number?

Thinking about getting my Torque converter changed. The transmissions guy wanted to know what the G/box serial number is so he can see if he has the right one in stock to match, but I can't for the life of me see it on the actual box in the place pointed out by others. I have been underneath the car with searchlights an' everyfink!

Can you tell off the VIN or any other way?

I only have the reference F38 for the TC off one of RRphil's posts. Is that correct?

Criag, did you perchance keep a reference when you changed the g/box oil and filter last year?

Thanks all
DB

I crawled underneath my 4.2 with my smartphone as it fit just in the space where the number is and took a decent picture Smile.

Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

You might have a small plate on the side of gearbox as on mine, near side near the air con drip pipe.

 If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Serial numbers change with each gearbox...

Model number for ours is 1058 000032

Other numbers on the plate are BMW-NR 7 508 713

Same numbers on both the ones I have...

The other dead giveaway is that the TC has four bolts that fix it to the flex plate and not three as used in other cars... Pete

thanks guys. Still couldn't find it on the actual gearbox but will use yours as ref.

On 173,000 miles and still going strong but think I will avoid any poss future damage and change the TC now. Will have a special party when she reaches 200,000 miles!! Bow down

Passenger side, directly in front of the large electrical plug, about three inches up from the sump and about four inches in front of where the Transfer box bolts on.... Pete
