Two days laneing, rocksliders got a hammering...

Spent the weekend doing a recci on a Coast to Coast route we have planned for later in the year on the other forum I'm on, all the existing routes we saw were further north and had virtually no offroading.. we have come up with a 262 mile trip with nearly 50% off road, we know the Lake District lanes well so started Saturday morning in Skelwith Bridge at 9am and stopped near Scotch Corner well gone 10pm so a real full days laneing, then another full day on Sunday and ended up in Whitby for fish and trips...

Some pics and a video, rock sliders actually got a small dent on the video, it is edited a bit as we waited for some walkers a couple of times, the FF struggled a bit at the top, the rear off side was off the ground as the rockslider had hit a boulder and picked the wheel off the ground, the other rear wheel was on a knife edge with no grip and both front tyres were on the slipperiest substance known to man... wet grass, with no weight on them, you can see my mate wedge a waffle board under the front wheel to help with the grip, first time I've had to turn the traction off and spin it up to get going, but she did it....

You tube video...

Hi,

Really lovely scenery up there in Yorkshire but I'm not going to make myself popular when I say that using a car in that environment is only going to ruin the pathways and landscape long term. Some of the pictures show a clear wearing away of the surface of the moorland and using a vehicle will only make it worse. I know the routes are probably legally accessable but I think it is a shame that the car is having such a harmful effect on the environment out there.

I love my Land Rover but would only ever want it to stick to the roads. Thats what they are there for. Each to his own I suppose.

Paul

They are not pathways, they are public roads that haven't been tarmaced, the ruts will have been there since they started using them many moons ago by horse and cart, would a 20foot wide strip of tarmac look better?? and where do you stop, the ground that your house is sitting on was once a green field or wood!!!!

I am a founder member of an organised Green Laning club, we only use public roads to drive on, we are members of GLASS and TRF and follow strict guidelines on using unsurfaced rights of way... We spend our own time on upkeep and repair of lanes and voluntarily stay off lanes where permanent damage will occur. Most damage caused on these lanes is done by heavy farm machinery by the land owners or by inadequate drainage because the local authority have no money to spend on unsurfaced roads.

It is also the only way that some of us (disabled) have any chance of enjoying our fabulous green and pleasant land... Pete

Specifically the second and third from the top?

Agree that continued responsible use of long-standing rights of way should be strongly defended - it's generally a tiny minority of idiots who ruin it for everyone else anyway.

Sorry. You've got it all wrong. Responsible laners don't go out to destroy these public roads e.g. We steer clear of sensitive routes in bad weather. Most damage is caused by natural water erosion. I too am a GLASS member etc.

Looks like a lovely drive Pete. Great to see the FFRR used as Land Rover intended as well. I'm not averse to the odd green lane myself, even in a 2011 'Charger. I recall also taking a 3 year old Vogue SE TDV8 across Salisbury plains too. Can't find that link but Stan will know for sure.

I can show folks around the Plain sometime but you would simply be following me, not an official tour and I won't be liable for any damage..... No trees and the big ruts can be avoided Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
