This is my theory on why TDV8 turbos let go frequently

Seems a massive job to get them out! Glad mine hasn't got a map on it, was thinking about it but decided not to, for that very reason.

Though If one of the op's units shows significant spindle wear, that could point to some level of oil starvation in the past, which might not point to a remap issue, more an oil feed problem. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The only FFRR I would remap is a TD6 as they are under stressed and even BMW gave them a power upgrade in the later X5's.

I wouldn't entertain a map on a TDV8 - not only speaking from personal experience, but also advice from a contact on the inside at LR - who even ditched his own mapped TDV8 before she lunched on her Turbo's.

As far as I know it's never been mapped. I do wonder if it is servicing though. It was due one when I bought it. So did one shortly afterwards. Im waiting to hear from someone in the know from jlr aswell about the turbos

It wasn't too bad to be fair, first evening I had a friend with me, so we spent a few hours assessing it and thinking of trying to do it without. Then we just started underneath, hardest part was the strut bolts seized in solid to the point of a scaffold tube, breaker bar and a sledge hammer . Then the next day I did the box end and then unbolted the lot and sat it on the trolley. Took a bit longer than expected as it was the first time, but I reckon you could drop the whole lot if I was to do it again in 3/4 hours comfortably

Also, was lucky, friend of mine had a brand new turbo from Land Rover in stock on the shelf (passenger side). Was stock that he wrote off earlier this year.
Best £350 I've spent this year! . Genuine Borg Warner unit!

Yep, have some news, the turbo I got from my friend was wrong . So I sent my pair off to be rebuilt.

Midland turbos rebuilt them, absolutely amazing company if I may say so, really quick, really informative. Have used them a few times before.

They suspected that what had happened is the left hand turbo had over spoiled from they reckon an egr fault, and it 'detonated' as such, and filled the other one with oil.

Have both back now all shiny! And a few boxes of other bits. Il try and take some more

According to midland turbos they get a set in every other week with the same problem. I'm going to blank the egr's off at the same time, just hoping it won't bring up the MIL light on the dash. Any body know if it will?

Just out of interest hiow much did they charge to rebuild the turbos? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

So nothing to do with having a map then, egr is the culprit. hmmmm.

surely it should be viewed in the same way as the Disco/Sport oil pump failures if you change the front casing on those engines and o it as a proactive work scope you avoid issues, in the TDV8 you proactively change the EGR valves and do the inevitable while your in there jobs and then respect the run down process as you should for any Turbo engine and you then avoid problems?
