Yes you may be right. I was quoting one I actually did for a client a few months ago. After much arguing with Garage & Land Rover I got them to agree 10 Hours labour at £100 ph down in the West Country...(May have been £1200 cannot be sure)

Point is how can LR blame anybody but themselves!!!!

I bought my just out of warranty 4.4 TDV8 AB with only 19K kms on the clock last month with the request that the updated drain pipe be fitted as part of the deal, suggesting that a smoking RR in 6 months time would not be good PR. I don't know whether the dealer or LR paid for it but the dealer principal told me at pick-up that it was a big job. I already knew LR's time estimate of 10.5 hours, hence my request.

I agree with Gaz that this needs to be addressed by LR. Its a design issue and they should issue a recall and not just do it when a customer comes and asks about it.. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Maybe we could volunteer a few owners to Watchdog to help push the issue... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Over the last two months have noticed my 2011 4.4 tdv8 billowing smoke out on 2 occasions and now think it is time I had the mod done, so wondered if anyone has successfully got Landrover to be reasonable and pay for the work on a car that has full MD SH and with only 38k miles.

Hi thanks for the reply and can confirm that mod not Benin done and all symptoms and clouds of smoke do point to the problem with the secondary turbo oil build up.

Does this issue have a ref # or anything from JLR?

TDV8 Puff Of Smoke

I had this problem in second year of three year warranty, car bought new. Dealer said it looked like I wasn't driving it the way it should be - give it some oomph now and again and all would be ok! Refused to do this and said unless it was sorted I would be seeking a full refund of purchase price and gave him my solicitors card!

I was then told that it wasn't a recall because not all vehicles had the same fault and it was dependant on how it was driven but they would sort it out FOC.

I got it back after 4 days and all has been well ever since - however there was a recall for front brake hoses also done FOC and the ref number was P054 on the letter from Land Rover. Hope this helps Bought it new and keeping it!

Thank Doug and since posting the car has been fine, not a whiff of smoke so perhaps it is the way it is driven? Ps the car has been back for the brake hose FOC.

as far as I know the issue relates to pressure in the oil system after switch off. The oil pressure remains high in the turbo and it can seep past the turbo oil seals (not a problem with the seals them selves) and into the secondary turbo.

If this turbo isn't spooled up regularly (happens at 2500rpm appx) then the oil can accumulate over time. the more times it is run and switched off without going above this rev line the more oil builds up.

The oil drain is to allow this pressure to drain away on switch off, so in a way yes it depends on how you drive it. It doesnt need thrashing to bits, it just needs the secondary turbo to be used to clear the oil build up.

As there is so much torque low down folks tend not to use the full power band, and as such this oil will build up as there can be lots of times when it is switched off without going over 2500 rpm and then on the one occasion that they give it a boot full they get smoke.

in theory it should be more noticeable on cars which do city milage. Though this is not necessarily the case as it is quite possible to drive at 80 without using the second blower.

No it shouldn't happen, but it can be prevented by actually using the secondary turbo system. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Good info NMJ. So the secondary turbo only comes into life after 2500revs? Is that a given or is it load dependent?
