2004 L322 Battery Drain - searched and tried loads!

Sorry this is being asked again but ......

Changed FSR (genuine part from LR)
New battery - Varta 110
Removed bulbs - (so special needs son doesn't switch on in rear)
Change some interior bulbs for led's
Disconnected elec mirrors (kept self adjusting)
Checked for water in quarter panels - looks fine
Sat nav does power down
TV tuner no longer working so connectors re-routed direct from sat nav to keep screen working.
Light does go off near gear stick but noticed today that 'little fan' in Hvac panel stayed on for over 30 mins (after originally switching off) on 2nd try. For this reason I have just cleaned the fan, and circuit board, and vent for fan.
Sometimes if I leave radio on when switching off engine, on return (usually following day) volume has gone to zero - but not every time!
Battery drains in RR not used for over 24 hours - this time it was down to 8.1 volts (first drain of new battery (3 months old).

Not sure if wiring loom fix done but no longer available - does anyone know any other ways around this problem?

The next easiest thing to check is for battery drain down through the alternator when the engine is off.
I'd be inclined to disconnect the large cable connected to the bulkhead jump post ( the one that goes down to the alternator and starter), leave the car overnight and see what happens.
The alternative is to disconnect the above cable and check with an ammeter for current drain by connecting the ammeter between the end of the disconnected cable and the jump post.
Do you have a telephone in the car and if so does it work?

There was a supplementary Nokia phone cradle wired in by previous owner. I removed it (although only by cutting wires as no idea where wired in Sad

I asked about the telephone because on my car, which also suffered a battery drain initially, the telephone didn't work.
I traced the problem to a module in the rear left compartment which had suffered water damage due to water ingress.
The module had two miniature relays on a circuit board one of which was corroded and stuck in the closed contacts position.
I removed the module and the battery drain totally disappeared.
As a don't require a car phone I never bothered re-instating the module.
Worth thinking about. Thumbs Up

My MY 2003 TD6 had a battery drain problem, mainly due to an ancient aftermarket Nokia HF unit which was draining up to 120ma. It was "hidden" under the footwell panels. The other (remaining) hungry unit is the immobilizer, consuming more than it should. The total drainage is now down to 60ma (compared to the previous 170-200ma) and no problems with starting the car, even in the winter time. According to the authorized dealer, the immobilizer unit could be reflashed which should take the consumption back to the normal level, but they cannot guarantee that it will work after the reflash. A new unit would cost 1200 euros. The tampered immobilizer is also the reason why my fullfat's engine can be started with the gear selector on "D" and "R" but more about that in another thread on this forum.

Just a thought, could you not connect an amp meter up to the battery to read the drain, then get someone to watch that as you pulled fuzes one at a time
When the amp meter shows no drain you have found the circuit the drain is on at least that would give you the area to investigate

This is where it gets difficult as it can be anywhere. Recently I've found one that was continuously draining my 2003 W211 E-Class Merc. It was under the rear parcel shelf. Not easy to spot unless you remove the rear bench seats... I know it doesn't help you a lot but tracker fitters don't usually disclose the location so it's not easy to find and remove one for obvious reasons.

You can measure the voltage drop across the fuse and calculate the current from that, based on the fuse resistance. A DC current clamp can also be a great help. Thumbs Up

Trouble with that is that pulling some fuses can wake the car up - so any fuse to be removed has to be done so and then let the car go to sleep. Thumbs Up

tracker location???

Reading this post reminds me that I will return from holiday (with another car) and almost sure finding a flat battery on my FF. The battery drain I still haven't been able to hunt down Evil or Very Mad
My car is fitted with a tracker by the first owner. This tracker might be the culprit of my drain Question Where are they usually installed in a FF? Are there any obvious places to look for? What do they look like? Is there a way to detect them? Bow down

the tracker could be hidden anywhere, in the sides of the boot, spare wheel well, under the front seats, inside the dash somewhere.

The whole point is they're installed somewhere they're not easy to find or get rid of easily.

Thnx Zirconblue. Yes I understand that they are installed in a way they're not easy to find. Do you know how they look like? Never seen such a thing bfore. Are there any signs of which I should know of when looking for the tracker?
