[URGENT] Removing the front knuckle

Guys Hi,

In an attempt to replace my knackered front upper and lower ball joints, I'm trying to remove the knuckle. It's the lower that's the problem, it's seized for good and I can't get it out in situ.

Q: Will locking the suspension mode (pad lock on the arm rest) keep the strut from dropping down once I remove the two bolts holding the knuckle or do I need to still support it somehow from the bottom?

Highly appreciate your quick response as doing it now and need to put everything back before the end of today!

Still needs supporting as the pressure in the air bag will drive it down to the limit of the damper

Didn't need to take the steering knuckle off in the end. Got the ball joint out in situ. After replacing it the clanking hollow noise is still there. I've only done one side though but you can hear the noise coming from the driver side (as well as from passenger's but that's for next week).

What else can be making this noise? Tie rod end? Anything else?

There are two lower ball joints, no upper ones. Have you checked both?? the drop links can give noise especially if the hardened washer under the top nut has been left off... Thumbs Up Pete

You are indeed correct, both are lower joints sitting next to each other. However I don't believe I've seen a washer, only flanged nuts. Is there supposed to be one or two - one for each link?

Edit: yes I replaced both ball joint.

Thanks again.

OK, so just to finish this one off. The noise was getting worse so I've ordered 4 new Lemforder anti-roll bar linkages from CP4Less (front and rear - £80 with the discount delivered) and yes, indeed, the front top joint had a washer which I reused. Didn't do the rear yet but the front is nice and quiet again. Nice! Very Happy

Top job, sorted... Thumbs Up

The rears don't tend to wear so much but may as well do them if you have them, if you have noise at the rear it is usually the upper and lower hub bushes, which are in fact enclosed heim joints....

If you need some then buy originals from Dan... lots of cheap rubbish about... Pete

Dan at Duckworths Land Rover Main Dealer, site sponsor on here, he gives trade prices and free P+P on most things... very good service from him, he also stocks OEM parts so you get the proper quality without the silly main dealer prices... Thumbs Up

Thanks Haylands. Will keep Dan in mind next time I need OE parts.

On a side note, I'm in LOVE with the new suspension feel. It feels so much tighter and more composed than before! The car is glued to the road, rolls silently and is still super comfortable. Feels like a completely new car to me! No squeaks or creaks we've had for over a year. Very pleased with it.
