Newbie - MY06 ride height drops + auto lights always on?

Hi all,

I've been rummaging around the forum to see if I can find an answer to my problems which I imagine are quite common, but alas I can't find anything - can any of you shed any light on these issues I'm having?:-

Air suspension - I like the look of my FFRR when it's at normal or high ride height (not access height). Alas whenever I stop the car and turn the engine off the car automatically lowers to access height - at least it does 9 times out of ten (without me selecting it). If I switch the engine back on and switch to off-road height, the car will raise and stay put, but by default it seems to drop. Anyone know if this is normal or if I have a fault/leaky air suspension??

Auto Lights - I noticed today that my lights (which I normally have set to auto) were on even though it was a bright sunny day. In the past they have always worked fine and only come on when it gets dark - as they should. I had my ECU remapped last week and am wondering if a numpty engineer could have reset an auto-lights ECU setting to default to "on" in error? Does anyone know if the auto lights are selectable in the ECU map in this way.

ECU settings - I need some changes making to the ECU settings (drive away locking enabled, etc) and have come to the conclusion a dealer will have to do this. If I take it in to a dealer, do I risk them reflashing my ECU back to factory settings and hence me loosing the expensive (but so far rubbish) remap I had done last week?

Apologies for all the questions....your help and advice is gratefully recieved.

Thanks all,

GL

Hi and welcome to the forums, if all these problems have started since you had the re-map I don't think you need a dealer I think you need to revisit the guy that did the re-map and make him fix them or make him pay a dealer to put them right. I doubt that a dealer will want to touch a remapped car to put right things that a third party has upset though. IIRC for a 2006MY you can prgramme the autolocking on or off yourself - have you looked in the owners manual? Sorry to sound a bit unsympathetic - I'm not I know how frustrating these small things can be! LR doesn't take kindly to remaps and dealers are not keen to get involved with problems resulting from them. Thanks for the reply Tim - the suspension issue has always been there, so I don't blame the remap for that one. I'm a bit of an anal type and have therefore read the manual from cover to cover more than once - enabling drive-away locking is defo a dealer tweak (according to the manual!).

I may be doing the remap guys a disservice at this point as I haven't really driven the car that much since I had the work done. It seemed like a good outfit, certainly wasn't cheap, they were also remapping Bentleys and Porsches whilst my car was in, and came with the recomendation of Quentin Wilson no less - so early doors on the effectiveness of the remap, the car certainly seems to run well, but I've not yet seen any noticable improvement in fuel economy which was the main aim and is a shame given I paid £470 for the job!!

Time will tell!

Thanks again for taking the time to reply,

GL

The suspension shouldn't drop, so that needs investigating. Maybe you have small air leak somewhere?
Does it drop right away when you switch the engine off or is it over time while you are away from the car?

Interestingly my auto lights were on most of the time too today. First time.
I'm wondering if it's something to do with the low sun, weather etc...
Came on as soon as I went under some trees.

PS. Welcome to the forum! Thumbs Up

Hi Fox,

Thanks for the welcome!

The suspension drops as soon as I switch the ignition off, which makes me wonder if the car is commanding it (in error) rather than it being a leak per se. Thing is it doesn't always do it, I wonder if it might be when the air in the reservoirs is at a low threshold (or am I now talking complete tosh!).....all a bit odd.

On the lights front I also considered whether the lights coming on was to do with the low angle of the Sun this afternoon - it was very low and very bright at the time - and also noted that there seemed to be a high number of other cars with their lights on too.....I assumed I was being nuts but now you've mentioned you thought the same I'm wondering if there is anything in it!! Another thought was that maybe my light sensor is obstructed with something (I washed the car yesterday as it had quite a lot of Autumn leaf debris on it)....any idea where the light sensor is located? I assume it's behind the windscreen on the back of the mirror (or is that the rain sensor I'm thinking of??).

Cheers and thanks again,

GL

It may be worth finding a friendly local independant garage that specialise in Land Rovers and pay them a visit. You can tell them about the re-map and they will be able to plug in your car and change the default settings.

Maybe while they are at it they can check that there are no suspension issues stored (and dropping is not set, but not sure it can be) and offer you advice as professionals. My Td6 did drop sometimes and it was found to be a pin hole in one of the pipes. It only did it once a week or two. If one side/end drops I think the FFRR drops all round the keep the vehicle level.

I have a 06MY car and I had the dealer do all of the Key programming with the ECU. The are all definitely dealer tweaks although i seem to recall the AutoLogic diagnostic system being able to do most things...

I has drive away locking, single point locking, seat memory and global open & close windows activated. It took a long time mind as the tech couldn't get IDS to upload everything to the car at once so had to do it all individually (an hour for each!)

The remap you have had should be safe as it resides in a completely different ECU on the car. The key functions reside in the body control ECU and IDS/Autologic only interrogate that module.

Interestingly I had my Auto lights switch on during bright weather last week. It only happened on one journey however and now they are fine again...

On the suspension front, there is something no right there. There is no configurable option to have the vehicle automatically drop to access height on engine shutdown. That said ideally the vehicle should be put into access mode whenever possible as this exercises the suspension airbags and help prolong their life and also allows the vehicle electronic to go to sleep sooner after locking. Leaving the car at normal height results in the electronics entering a standby mode and there for draining the battery quick if being left parked up fro more than a week or so...

I haven't been able to gain any written evidence of the benefits of access height but I have had this advice from 3 different LR specialists and 2 dealers. Take it with a pinch of salt I suppose but there is no harm in it. 06MY 4.4 V8 Autobiography Cairns Blue with Navy & Parchment Interior

Thanks Steve - all good info. I don't think I'll worry about the lights (will check again today and see if it's still happenning). I'll also get the lowering checked when it goes into the stealer for the programming tweaks.

Thanks all - great forum!
