Water from Expansion Tank....

Hi,

Last couple of weeks I noticed a small pool of water under front passenger wheel coming from the expansion tank above of my 2003/53 V8 Vogue (BMW 4.4). Tank and Cap changed but still coming out. Last night I dried all the coolant off from around the tank and left it over night....this morning there's coolant around the tank again by the cap and the plug. How? Car not started ......any ideas anyone?

I've had a looked around and suggestions range from Head Gasket to Thermostat. Radiator was changed last year with all fresh coolant too so no issue with blockages and fins look fine.

cheers

Well it's back...and nothing found Sad

Pressure Test - OK.
Thermostat - OK.
No fault codes recorded.

Bit miffed though as despite saying they had'nt found any leak there was water still on the floor and around the cap of the header tank.

So, when I got home I took a look again and wrapped PTFE around the two threads on the top of the tank (Main cap and smaller, 'grub' screw).

Went for a 10 mile run at motorway speeds and no leaks at all. Let it rest for 20 minutes, no leaks... Have I fixed it...only tomorrow morning will tell if there is a patch of coolant under the front... Gavin

Daveo,

Exactly mate. The tank and cap are brand new too Shocked

If it turns out this is the case I'll invest in new genuine LR items and not the Britpart ones I've got - probably all from the same production line though. Perhaps I've just been unlucky with a 'friday afternoon' cap/tank... Laughing Gavin

Ok - might have the reason for all this Very Happy

Garage rang me this morning and noticed that the cap on another 2003 V8 had 160 (I think) stamped on the top - not 140 that I have on mine. The 140 one is for a Diesel TD6 not the V8 4.4 apparently.

Could someone on here who has a 4.4 and someone who has a TD6 take a look at there caps and tell me whats stamped on the top please.....??? Gavin

My 4.4 M62 BMW had a 200kPa cap, it now has a 140.

My tank was split as seen just at the transition from horizontal to vertical on the side - see pics. I replaced the tank today.
