TRANSFER CASE OIL FFRR

Hi

I am about to change both cars the Transfer case Box oil

LR parts have the oil as: SHELL TF0753

What no body knows is what grade of oil is it - as LR fills up little plastic bottles and puts a sticker on it saying
"Special Transfer Box Oil"

which is as good as a bar of soap !

now as my good LR dealer has quoted me £120 + VAT for each car to have its transfer oil changed - you can imagine that its such a little job - labour 10 minutes at tops.

Parts:
IYB500020 - Drain Oil Plug @ £ 2.35
IYF500030 - washer @ £ 0.54p

You can source the oil for around £24.00

But who know exactly what grade of oil is it ?

Castrol ? Grade ?

75W - 90 ???

I ve got a complete LR workshop manual - but at the moment I cant find it in here as its 3500 pages
both cars are 4.4 TDV8 - 12 year models

Thanks in advance

Just found this if it helps anyone:

http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...ations.pdf

more info:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic10978.html

Got to the bottom of this

It pays to know top people in certain companies - called the head guy I know who has confirmed:

Shell TF0753 is the same as:
Castrol BOT26 FMB1 Fully Synthetic Transfer Case Oil

GRADE OF OIL IS:
SAE 75W90 API GL4

suggest you check on all this yourself and research it too - but I am happy with my results

again - hope this helps anyone reading it

You only need a litre of it, and a litre bottle from LR is about £13. I did mine a few months ago.

Hardly worth shopping around for that price. But yes it was Castrol and has the specification on the bottle.

The auto gearbox fluid however is a different matter - LR Want over £20 a litre (5HP24) for that stuff and you need 7 or 8 litres! You can find the same stuff half price in identical Mobil branded bottles!

no problem, the picture above is just a generic one, the actual bottle was a castrol 1ltr one (all be it trade/industrial labelled rather than flashy retail labelling) in a land-rover box.

I don't remember changing the bungs on mine, i think it was just two alloy washers. (unlike the gearbox bungs which have bonded on seals)

Purchased my transfer box oil today from advanced. Just wondering if anyone knows the amount needed, the bottle I got contains 946ml which I'm told is enough. I don't want to end up being short.

Earlier ones are only 1ltr fill from dry or 0.96ltr refill.

They presumably changed the transfer box with the 6 speed gear boxes. Smile

If you look at our website we list oil grades and quantities in the service item section for each model.

I have given up telling people to use 75w90 for transfer boxes and simply list it as the Shell TF0753. I did this research a long time ago and found it to be basically 75w90. However I got a little annoyed with so many opinions from forum experts telling me I was wrong. (Not this forum I might add)

Needless to say my Magna Steyr runs on 75w90.

LR have a habit of hiding true grades and even on Microcat they refer you to the Castrol website for data, once on the Castrol site they refer you to the dealer for the correct oil. Nothing like running a closed shop on data is there! Paul Redding
