intermittent power steering issue

Hi - I have a 2004 4.4 V8 with LPG. For some time, the power steering has intermittently failed on start-up. I had the local LR specialist look at it and they changed the water pump, suggesting it was leaking and water from it was allowing the belt to the steering pump to slip. However, this has made no difference, apart from to the size of my overdraft!

Works most of the time, and when it doesn't, an engine restart sometimes kicks it back into life. Any ideas please?

You don’t also have an intermittent fault in unlocking the back doors (and fuel trap) do you by any chance? I do (2005MY) and when that occurs I also have a problem with the steering being stiff too. Restarting generally sorts it all out.
If this is your problem, it is apparently a not-unknown issue. I have read that the close proximity of the rear door locking and power steering signals on the BCM is the source of this particular problem. A new BCM is supposed to be the permanent solution to that but I haven’t (yet) gone down that route. It amases me how garages think... the Range Rover has a wading depth higher than the bottom of the drive belt so it was made to run submersed in water without slipping.. mine has been feet deep without issues...

It could be the Servotronic Valve, a well known weak spot... do a search on here for more info...

When I first had my 4.4 it had intermittent power steering issues (along with a few others) eventually replaced the battery and after that it felt and drove like a different car
Battery was tested a number of times and showed ok ,but after it was changed no more PAS problems

As Pete said the Servotronic valve on the steering rack is a common fail, also the wiring is not too hot, could be a corroded plug, or it could be the BCM under the passenger seat has had a bath and is not playing ball anymore.

1 Check that its dry under the seat

2 find the valve, behind the plastic wheel arch, drives side, and check the plug is not corroded, if it is some contact cleaner from Maplins, and the like, might cure it

3 if they are all good then it's more than likely the servotronic valve its' self

Hi all - and thank you for all your input. Yes! I do also have an issue with the rear door locks and the tailgate lock. So much of this seems to be making sense.

Will be looking to try some of your ideas/solutions over the next week or so and will let you know how it progresses. Much appreciated Cool

You need a new BCM module, your unit and the relays inside the unit are failing that is what is causing your problems with the power steering and your locking of the rear doors.

Around £200 from Dan for a new one then it will just need programming

I can't comment on the solution but I can confirm that on my 4.4l petrol, 2005, the power steering fails whenever I can't open the rear doors. The link is undeniable. I find it irritating but not enough to fork out for a repair.

I too found it irritating, so much so that I ended up buying and fitting a new BCM (see my thread- in the wiki - http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic40009.html) At the time the cost was a tad under £200 from Dan.

Problems solved ... and as a bonus it also seems to have fixed my intermittent rear parking sensor problems too!
