Jerry cans on roof rack

I have an Expedition Roof Rack (factory / G4); No floor; Has anyone found a jerry can mount that suits this style rack? Ideally to mount two jerry cans horizontally side by side....like this:

The maximum weight you are allowed on the roof when off roading is 50kg incl the rack itself, one full jerry can weighs over 20kg so with two of them, their holder and the roof rack you are over weight already without putting anything else up there...

The position of the mountings for the roof rack are ridiculous for a supposedly off road vehicle, they are far to far inboard to be any use at all.... maybe some modification to spread the weight towards the stronger outside edge of the roof would work!!! Pete

Yes, I know all that.

I just did a 7000km Outback Trip in Australia across some of the world's roughest roads....oh, towing a 3.5ton caravan,....with two spares up top plus some gear so it was over the 50Kg limit. I'm not the first to assume LR conservative maths and I wont be the last. It was fine. One spare plus two empty jerry cans for most of the trip out West (bitumen, dirt, reasonable access to fuel stations) will be fine weight wise. Once we get to exceedingly remote areas (Coongie Lakes, South Oz) we will need the full Jerry's and will be at low speed so again the rack will also be fine. Common sense is the key.

Anyway, after some additional DD - both Ark and ARB do a double holder that I think I can make fit.

I thought the roof limit was 100kg or such?

Im pretty sure it would support a lot more weight from the ones you see that have had dinged roofs they have taken a much greater whack than 100kg loading Smile

IMO your best bet is to replace the rear bumper with one that has an integrated wheel carrier and have mounts fitted to carry the jerrys on that.

Its an ass even when your tall to get stuff off the roof and much safer to have it lower down. Also by getting the spare wheel out of the boot you get some extra boot storage Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
