Poland 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue
L322 to G-Wagen anyone? Or the other way around? Experience?

I have had my L322 only for like 5 months now and yesterday when I was checking out my local ads I found a very nice G-Wagen. A black 2001 but facelifted G400 with a bonus of genuine G55 AMG wheels and wide arches. Almost a dream spec.

And it got me thinking. I always admired and wanted a G-Class sometime down the road. Another one on my bucket list after an RS4, 911 Turbo and a Fullfat Range.

Wonder if any of you guys made similar move. Now after some time with my FFRR I start to question if it would be a wise move. I already got used to a bit newer technology that can be found in a FFRR (touch screen, bluetooth, mp3, reverse camera etc etc) and 2001 G-Wagen is pretty basic in those terms. I also never had an opportunity to drive one, wonder how it drives compared to an FF. The engines and performance should be similar, 3.6 TDV8 with 272 hp in 2700 kg range vs 4.0 Turbodiesel making 250 hp in a 2200 kg Merc.

I guess best option would be to meet the guy and see for myself but any input from you guys will be appreciated. 07 3.6 TDV8 Vogue

Rightly or wrongly, i've never really considered the G-wagon as something to compare to the RR. I've always put it in the bracket of comparing against a defender 90/110. In that bracket its a far better option. In comparison to an RR, I think you would be downgrading a lot in terms of interior, modernism etc etc, and not getting much alternative in return. Particularly because its a conversion . . so it isn't an AMG stupid power V8 . . . which means for all those looks, its not really got the full on mental experience that I personally think the wide stance + wheels needs.

If I saw that in the street, I would expect the V8 grumble.
If I got in it and drove it, I would expect the V8 grumble.

If it didn't have it, then every drive would have that "wonder what the V8 is like" feel to it.


Keep the RR! or go big! V8 or else ...

I'd be looking at getting the G. I think it's a great car. Looks good as a refurb/upgrade too. Very nice indeed. It's not really compared to a FFRR often but I think it'll be solid and reliable, some luxury and off road confidence plus nice street looks. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Yes, many are overpriced. This one posted in my original post would be around 15k GBP so really not bad, especially since it is a 2001 so already has more modern interior. 07 3.6 TDV8 Vogue

I heard from various tests that they are not nearly as comfortable as the FFRR nor is the on road handling anywhere near the FFRR and offroad they are behind the FFRR.

I always regarded them as more utilitarian, like the Classic basically. Believe they are quite reliable, as you'd expect from Merc. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

They are basic compared to a P38 let alone the ffrr, the only thing that they do really well is power...... had a run in with a Brabus G wagon in the Landcruiser......... I might as well have been in reverse Shocked Rolling with laughter Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I wouldn't compare it to a FFRR on anything other than price. It's a lot more like one of those aftermarket Defenders with a lot of bespoke luxuries.

I'm not dissing it. They're great. But underneath they are old school Defender like. (And there are both pluses and minuses to that!) think of it as a Defender with reliability and everything working like it should. Off road excellent. On road, I'd expect it to drive more like a Defender than an FFRR.

But hey. If you have the cash....

I would expect, like the Defender, a very low rate of depreciation.

I had never thought to compare it with a Defender before, but it makes sense, both were used by their respective countries military, and adopted by a few others........ although I think that L/R did a slightly better job promoting their product, maybe it was down to the price, it would appear that L/R weren't the greedy one's for a change Shocked

And if Land Rover had an in house tuning division, the Defender could be on a par with the G Wagon...... although a Special Tuning version of the Defender might leave a lot to be desired.... we are talking about the people that gave us the Rally Special Land Crab, and then they had to play with a Morris Marina Shocked Maybe it's just as well that they no longer exist and it has to be left to outsiders to do the job Laughing Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
