InControl WiFi or separate MiFI dongle

My car is fitted with InControl WiFi, which creates a hotspot in the car and allows 8 devices to connect to the internet. This requires a data SIM to be installed (which I have done via EE). The InControl WiFI is connected to the powerful roof mounted antenna which supposedly increases reliability of continuous connection while on the move. However .... unfortunately, the car only supports 3G, which is limited to about 6Mbit/s.

Alternatively, I could buy an in-car MiFI unit which would support 4G (21Mbit/s).It would not be connected to the car aerial.

So question ... what is better ? Are the claims of the better connection of the InControl true ? Any user experiences ?

Thanks,

It will mostly depend on the signal strength in your location. 4G needs a much better signal then 3G. I have a 4G phone that often drops to 3G. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Is the MiFi on a better contract than your phone ?

All I do is create a local hotspot on my phone if I need to connect anything else.

Unless you can connect it to the antenna, or it's much cheaper, I can't see what a MiFi would really give you

The data SIM plans appear to be better than what I have on my phone. Also issues of using your phone ...

1. Uses battery on the iPhone very quickly
2. Not all plans allow tethering or creating hot-spots.
3. Sometimes limitations on how many connections.
4. Your partner has to get the same plan.

So far, from what I have researched it seems shouldn't under-estimate the quality of the antenna on the RR. 4G as other have said is less reliable and in many areas 4G falls back to 3G in any case. Just a shame that Landrover don't offer 4G out of the box ...

I have an ee mobile wifi dongle I use in the car sometimes but I bought it mainly to use on holiday in the caravan. Being able to remove it and use it elsewhere is a real benefit.

I guess for younger kids it makes sense

Mine have their own phones - and are on 3 - so I just got them unlimited data & they can tether whatever they like.

We generally go on holiday in countries covered by the feel at home cover - so no roaming charges either - though they can't tether whilst abroad.

It's made life far less stressful now that I don't have to police their mobile phone bills especially on holiday Thumbs Up

I was thinking for facebook, eBay etc whilst on the go, using the iPad, is it likely to connect to the internet enough of the time to prevent it becoming frustrating
