Download Rave from the WIKI (link top right of this page under fullfatrr.com)

All the details are in there... pretty straightforward, you will need a viscous fan removal spanner (32mm if I remember right) and a tool to hold the fan whilst you undo it, that's the only awkward bit...

If you look on youtube you might find some for the BMW M62 engine (that's what you have) used in the 5 and 7 series and the X5... Thumbs Up Pete

The special Land-Rover tools are just a very long spanner to give more leverage and a locking tool to grip the water pump pulley. It's a lot easier with them but you can manage with out them.

Although you can buy special "Viscous fan spanners" in Halfords etc, an ordinary 32mm spanner is much better, they're longer and much more solid, which makes them better for giving a clout with a hammer.
The generic fan spanners are cranked and thinner for vehicles where access is difficult or there isn't much room between the water pump and the fan - this isn't an issue on yours.

You can use a pry bar (18" or 2ft is an ideal length), to jamb behind one of the bolts on the pump pulley while you undo the fan, it's handy to have a second person to clout the spanner with a hammer to crack the fan free, but i managed it solo.

The most fiddly bit with fans, is getting the thread started when refitting.

+1 for RAVE, it tell you all you need to know about the car really.

I just took the alternator off, then you don't drain any more than you need to, seals with an "O" ring so no silicon etc needed, then just top it up when your finished.... Pete
