Air Suspension - a lesson learnt!

OK, so over the last year i was having intermittent "air suspension faults". Normally a 'bong' and a loss of light on the centre console [strangely started when turning right!].

Anyway all appeared normal and when restarting it was fine. However the problem became progressively more frequent, until finally every time i switched on and drove for a few mins the 'bong' with suspension fault was given.

A code was extracted and everyone [LR main D + Indy] said my compressor was kaput....

Ordered a new compressor and had it fitted [with software uplift]. It worked for a very short while.....

Further inspection revealed a worn [blue] air supply pipe, worn where it was over part of the chassis.

I am happy to say that having this repaired and the new compressor all is now normal [touch wood].

Hello David,

Good you found the Censored thing.

Had my FF on the ramp last week and also found the rear right line hitting the chassis (over the upper suspension attachment). Placed a piece of rubber hose over it.

Can you describe where your blue line was touching the chassis? Might be worth checking that one too.

Hello Joep,
correct where the piping goes over the rear upper suspension arm. Worn completely through. Cut, reconnected and then reinforced with a rubber hose....

is the pipe a 6mm by chance ?
This is the exact same sounding issue I have.....

I'm going to take a look this week, any advice on where to check first and the process of repair? Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Nick,
Yes indeed the pipe is about 6mm and blue. From beneath follow the pipe as it exits the boot, you'll see where it goes over the rear suspension arm.
I will check with the mechanic to see if its before or after the valve.
The repair was simple, cut the pipe either side of the worn part and then use a pneumatic push fit compressed air fitting.
If i can i will get some photos of the repair and position next week.

worth checking your brake line too around that area as yesterday after losing all my brake fluid the garage found the brake line worn through directly below the nearside rear seat behind a removable panel, the pipe had worn where it is clipped to the chassis.
the brake line runs parallel with the blue air line at this point too.

Did you repair the existing pipe or add a new piece, I'm going to order some bits off ebay to sort this. Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Nick,
The existing pipe was cut, about 1cm iirc, and joined. It was then covered with a thick piece of rubber which was secured.

Did you sleeve the existing pipe with a larger diameter pipe or wrap and secure it ?

Sorry for so many questions but I'll have limited access to the underside as I am using a friends ramp one night when his garage is closed. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I think it was thick rubber. I'm seeing the friend [mechanic] who did it on Wednesday - certainly access was limited, it was up on the ramp, i will try and get photos of it and a very full explanation.
You should have the full run down by Thursday if that's OK.....

Just a word of warning, having used the pneumatic push fit connectors many times in the past on air lockers and P38a EAS I have had a couple pop open after time. If its possible get the metal type not plastic ones if you intend to leave the repair permanent or at least carry a spare

Sorry for the late reply. I spoke with the mechanic and he confirmed it was over the rear o/s suspension arm. Unfortunately we did not have time to pop it back on the ramp for a photo session.
When the ground warms up here i'll crawl underneath it......

Thanks Sir.
As an update from my end I had a friend supply stainless push fit valves and got the car on the ramp. There was no leak at all from that area so after a suspension reset and a check of any codes (there were none) we were back to square one.

The car has been two weeks now without a fault and the suspension seems to be behaving itself so I have no complaint....other than the weak battery giving out again and a friend having to assist with his VW amarok Big Cry Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........
