3.6 TDV8 Cold Start Issue

Dear All,

recently came across cold start problem RR 3.6 TDV8, please find link to video:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0ShSS7tt...cslist_api

General info:
1. New battery (bought on 12/31/2015 and fitted on 01/01/2016)
2. All fuel injectors works perfectly.
3. Seems couple of glow plugs don't work.
4. Starting cold conditions: -14C
5. Car wasn't started for 15 hours, during the night was -19C.
6. All filters were changed before winter.
7. Diesel is winter up to -32C (A class from Neste (Finland).

Could you please advise if problem related to Glow Plugs?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Sounds more starter motor than glow plugs. With a good battery and starter motor the engine should spin over nice and quickly , the glow plugs are there to assit it firing into life when it's cold. From the clip it sounded like the motor was struggling to turn over.

As you have replaced the battery (was it fully charged when you replaced it?) it should have enough juice in it to spin the motor over nice and quickly . Have you cheked the voltage of the battery to see if it's got a bad drain? If not and teh battery is good I would go down the route of a starter motor..

Just a few thoughts .

cheers

Simon

Just another thought, is your engine oil to the right spec for winter - too heavy a grade might slow down the motor a bit

Simon.

thank you for support. Battery was fully charged. In general, I've never had issue with battery or any power leakage, even with old one, until it went dead, which served for 7.5 years. After the first start, every following start through out the day runs smoothly as it should be.
Oil is for the winter. I've brought car to garage, will see tomorrow what will be the outcome.

Sound like it could be starter related, I had intermittent starter motor engagement but after replacement starts quickly even in -14°C Thumbs Up

BTW, you don't need to get the glow plug light time out every time if you do concurrent starter attemps, the first heat up period should be fine for a couple of immediate attempts if it does not ignite the first time.

Here's how I replaced the starter http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic31909.html Supporter and maintainer of EDF - Mrs Edfors' shopping cart.

Edfors, thank you.

Will test tomorrow starter and additionally check glow plugs to be on safe side.

The result is as follows:
1. Starter is great
2. 5 glow plugs are dead. Ordered 8 genuine LR ones.

Will revert back with the final result later.

Thanks all of you.
